Perdition Clearing (A Work in Progress)
« on: June 21, 2012, 03:14:23 PM »
Formerly known as Fort January, a little town known as Perdition Clearing has transformed itself over the past few decades. However, progress is a slow beast, and the development of Perdition Clearing pales to that of Riverview, or even Twinbrook. Services are spread thin, transport beyond its borders even thinner, and the winter is here to stay.

I've had this idea for a long time. Ever since I got Ambitions, I really wanted to make a desolate, really run-down world. Converting Twinbrook into one proved to be a little unwieldy, so I finally caved in and ran CAW to realize my dreams (or nightmares). Most of what I have to show now is terrain painting and sculpting (I also have some of the citizens made, either finished or still sitting in the bin), which is going much better than I ever expected. Now that I have a couple roads and lots placed, I feel like everything is falling into place so well. I've never gotten this far with a world before!

So I open this thread for feedback and criticism as I progress.

I think it's awesome you are taking on such a huge project - can't believe you're doing it alone! I am way to chicken to attempt a whole new world on my own. Can't wait to see how it goes.

It is rather daunting, but building the lots is insanely fun. In fact, I can even show what it looks like now with a few buildings.

The bustling town center! It still needs work. :P

But I finished up the hospital.

For a tundra wasteland, they have pretty nice laundry amenities.

And a place to sell their wares.

And two rabbitholes on the same lot. What could possibly go wrong? (A legitimate question; I'm pretty sure it's okay, but can I get confirmation on this?)

And I'll leave you with the first house. Still needs furnishing, and a roof. I need some honest feedback on my architectural skills, because that's never been my strong point. At least I can guarantee that the sims will look Twinbrook-esque excellent. For sure.

This looks great, Trip! (Can I call you Trip?  ???) I love the terrain sculpting and the grungy-looking town centre.

And two rabbitholes on the same lot. What could possibly go wrong? (A legitimate question; I'm pretty sure it's okay, but can I get confirmation on this?)

Sunset Valley has the bookstore, grocery store and theatre on the same lot. I think you'll be OK.  :)

I like the laundromat's exterior and the general look of the house. If I could make a suggestion, it would be to use less of the default wall/floor colours and make your own in Create-a-Style instead. If you're not yet confident in your building, I highly reccommend the guide's building section and ruthless_kk's building tutorials here, here and here. Building takes a bit of practice, but it's so fun. :)

Ooh, I look forward to seeing those Sims! I love Twinbrook.

Ohh this will be awesome for apocalyptic stories! It looks like a scary step to try but it is so fun to create a world - like playing in a God mod - let there be a mountain -> click-> here is the mountain  ;D

You did fantastic job with shaping and painting mountains - and I'm glad you are having a great time doing it as it is showing on your results!

Ausette already told you, you can have several rabbitholes on one lot without any issue.  So far the architecture of lots is suitable for your idea.

Keep up the great work  :)

@Ausette: Yeah, I discovered create-a-style for build/buy mode rather recently. I'm still getting used to it, and still mostly use it for minor recoloring. But the world is still in its infancy, so I have time.

@Anushka: It feels a little like SimCity 4's terrain sculpting tools, but a lot more advanced and slightly easier to manipulate. Oh, the nostalgia. D:

Thanks for all the feedback!

I agree with Ausette.  Create a Style is a great tool, and you should use it liberally.  Alot of EA's default colorings are good, but good use of  Create a Style can make your builds alot better.

On another note, are you going offer you lots seperatly when you finish?

Third, I noticed you are using the default textures in your pictures.  Did you know you can add your own custom textures to you world?  This link tells you how if you didn't know, also has some textures you download.
My Builds
Sweetwater Cafe and Nectary
Growing Family Home
Sunset Valley Fire Department
Savey Simoleon Mall
I welcome suggestions and constructive criticism about any of my builds on their threads.

Do you mean terrain paint textures? The snow is actually a custom one by me. But yeah, I play it way too safe when it comes to customization. We all have our vices. :P

As for the lots, I might offer them separately if there is a demand for it.
