Wraparound porches and covers
« on: May 29, 2012, 05:11:34 PM »
I am experimenting with building a two story house., no problem in building the house, but not sure what to do with a wraparound porch.  I laid the foundation, built the frist two floor and then added to the foundation for a wraparound porch.  I added the columns and brought over the wood to cover the porch and go one row past the columns.

When I put the roof on, the porch covering didn't have a roof on them.

What did I do wrong?  How do you build a wrap around porch and have it covered and what about a balcony, can they also be covered?

Are you using auto-roof?  Auto-roof only puts roofs on rooms.  You need to manually put roofs on porches.

Was the porch completely enclosed or did you have the stairs in place already? I'm guessing you have the stairs there and so the porch isn't closed in. A roof will only be added automatically to areas that are closed in.
Have you seen the roof guide? There is a wrap around porch with roof on this page of it.

I was using auto roof, so I  guess that was my problem, I will go read what has been written about roofs.

And the only confusion, if you can call it that, was the stairs I put in refused to go near a wall, they wanted to be open all around them.  I created a foyer and placed the stairs there with space to walk around them and on one side put in a study/library and the other the dining room.

I will read up on building roofs and do some more practicing.
