When you get Late Night, are you allowed to keep your old house and just go to the city when you want to, or are you required to give up your old house and live in an apartment in the city?

Welcome to the forum.  Unfortunately, your sims cannot have two places at once.  Would be kinda nice though, to have two in the same city.  Only way you can have two places, is to get your visa points and purchase a house in one of the countries. :)

Also, is there two places? For example, is the old town deleted, and only the city is available, or can you go from town to town?

The way it works is that, when you have expansions or towns from the Sims 3 Store, you get to choose where you want to play when you start a new game.  In normal gameplay, you can only live in one town for the duration of the game.  So, let's say you have the base game and you've added Late Night.  When you start up a new game, you'll have to choose between Sunset Valley and Bridgeport.  You'll get all of the expansion's items and new gameplay in either town, but you have to choose one to start playing.  There are ways to use Edit Town to move your family to a different town, but it technically would be a new game when you do that.

Does this help?

it helps a lot, thanks, but if you choose bridgeport, are you allowed to just visit the other town and come back, or are you forced to stay in Bridgeport the whole game

You have to stay in Bridgeport - there's no "visiting" except for the special World Adventures travel destinations (where you can't live permanently).

Hi Sulme. The only way to do what you want is with Twallan's mod "Traveler". If you have that mod you can live in one city and purchase a vacation home in another. My sim lives in Starlight Shores and has a vacation home in Bridgeport. She does her singing career in both.

I believe mods are for advanced players.  If someone is new to the game, it's best to learn everything the way the game is written before trying to change it.  Just sayin'.  :)
