Ch. 16: ReconciliationI slept alone in my bed on the night that I discovered Omar was a criminal. The bed was cold, but I took comfort in knowing that Omar wasn't coming home for hours. The man I had known, loved even... and still love to this very day, was a criminal. I didn't want to know why. Would it have even mattered? Whatever the circumstances, I was still upset with Omar. I wondered how long I could keep the contentment to myself. I didn't have long to wonder, though. Morning came with a surprise. I was pregnant.
And I had to find a way to confront Omar.
It took me many days before I had gotten the courage up to talk to him, but life in the house went on. Our dear Luna brought home a gigantic space rock and we managed to sell it for 12,000 simoleans. I was thrilled! The money was spent on a home gym and a studio. It wasn't quite enough money to finish both, but we managed to add more over time.
Peanut finally took her first, creaky steps into old age. I thought the grey spots just gave her more character.
Our bird Lemon passed away. I was horrified to walk into the kitchen and find him dead. We didn't get a new bird right away, because I knew we would be having more expenses soon.
Then, while I was watching tv in the entertainment room, Omar came in and silently switched the television off. I didn't say a word. I knew what was going to happen, but I wanted to see what he would have to say first.Omar: Brianna, I don't know how to say this any other way than I don't have a job in politics anymore.
Brianna: I know... I've noticed Panther hasn't been over in a while. I suspected something may have happened.
Omar: I had a feeling you knew. Do you want to know why I don't have that job anymore?
Brianna: No. But I need to know.
Omar: I was stealing campaign funds, and I got caught. That's how I was able to support us after Cecily was born, but I finally got caught. They fired me on the spot.
Brianna: You shouldn't have been stealing money, Omar. Panther is your best friend! How could you do when he's also your boss?
Omar: I know. I took all the responsibility. He got demoted once they found out how many times I had stolen that he didn't catch.
Brianna: How many times?
Omar: Four.
Brianna: ...what are you going to do for work now?
Omar: That's the part I was getting to. You're not going to like this, but at least let me finish the story before you say anything. The very day I was fired, I got offered a new job. A group that works out of the dilapidated building across town called me, heard what I had done, and wanted my "skills." I said yes.
Brianna: But Omar, you can't just--
Omar: I only said yes because I'm going to turn them in. I'm only going to work with them for a short while. I'll let Panther turn them in when the time is right. He'll get promoted back to where he was, maybe even higher, and he will tell them how I helped and get me my job back.
Brianna: I don't know... Will that even work?
Omar: Yes. I've talked to Panther about it. In two weeks, the gang will be making a deal, and I'll signal Panther to call in the police while I'm doing my part--which I won't do. There's nothing to worry about.
Brianna: I really hope nothing goes wrong.
Omar: I promise you won't have to worry.
Brianna: Good. Because I'm pregnant.
I can honestly say that I felt relieved at that moment, and everything finally felt all right. A few days later, I went into labor. It was much more painful than when I had Cecily.
It turned out that I was having twins. We named them Clarissa and Dallas. I wish I had known then what was going to happen to their father. Maybe I could have protected them better.
