How Many .package Files Can You Have at Once?
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:42:30 PM »
My brother recently fixed my game after we'd been getting an "Unknown Error" because WA glitched. He did so by renaming my Electronic Arts folder, forcing it to create a new one, and then moving my .packages, .sims3packs, saved games and saved Sims. I also had to move in all the new .packages I downloaded during my period of not being able to play the game. When we tried loading it, it locked up on this window.

I kept it there for about 15 minutes, and nothing happened. The amount of .package files in there war 1,075. I tried removing around half of them and putting them in a different folder, bringing the number of .packages down to 454.

The game was able to run, but it took 20 minutes to load one of my save games, and even then it was incredibly laggy. That part is odd, since that was approximately the same amount as I used before my game broke, and it ran fine.

Any ideas?

Wow, you seriously need to reduce the number of package files you are using. Once you get above 200 package files the game will lag considerably. You can reduce the number of package files you use a few different ways:

1. Use fewer packages. This is a good solution if you're not attached to your mods/packages, but most people find this too limiting. Luckily, there are alternatives.
2. Merge your package files.  To merge your package files, you will need a program like s3pe. Since you are on a mac, I can't provide extra support for this. But here are a few links:

Merging package files to reduce lag
S3PE - A program used to edit package files.
Using S3PE on a mac
Merging package files on a Mac
Un-merging a file from a merged package

3. Non-Mac users can use CC Magic, which is an amazing tool for organizing and merging package files.

This might sound like a "stupid" question, but how do you find out how many .package files you have installed? Where are they located? Thanks. :)

Well, packages are CC and if you have them, you'd know where they are, because you initially have to create the folder for them. :)
The location would be Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Mods/Packages. But you won't have Mods or Packages folder unless you created them.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong and there are some .packages that come with the game.  :-[

The only "CC" we have are items we bought from the store. No 3rd party content. We have a few of the Nraas mods, but nowhere near 200 - more like 7, heh. The only other .package files we have are in the DCBackup folder (currently a little over 500). But I don't think that's what they're talking about for merging packages.

Sounds like you have no reason to merge anything :) The DCBackup can be ignored. In fact you can delete those packages if you wish: see this post, tip #5.
