All Around Sims3 - I want you to know that I've removed this poll from this thread as well.   There is an entire thread of first impressions from when the Pets expansion came out that can help you.   Some people like playing with pets and some people like playing without.   Opinions are always going to vary but remember Pets is an expansion pack which means it also requires the base game to play.   

On another note, you can't actually only play as a pet.  You have to be a pet and it's owner so it's two different Sims.

Even though I can be my pet, I don't. I like to not control the pet so much as I can. :)
