Ask about job - self-employment and professions

Do sims outside the active family, ones that have never been part of it, become self-employed or take up professions?  If so, when a sim asks another sim about their job and the sim being asked is either self-employed or in a profession, how does the sim respond?  I am interested to know if you can deduce which self-employment career or profession a sim is in just from asking.  Also, the new Show Time careers, which category do they fall into: self-employment or profession?

The new showtime careers are professions. I've had homeless townies because acrobats/singers/magicians and when I ask about career they tell you that's they are.   In my experience, no Sim outside of an active family will enroll into a self-employment career.   Most inactive Sims will only join a career if they are programmed to or are needed to hold a spot as a co-worker.

I have found homeless townies jumping professions.  One jumped from being a paparazzi to being in the business career to being a singer in the course of three days.   There will always be a townie (homeless or otherwise) that will join the Stylist/Tattoo Artist Career, consignment shop clerk, showtime professions but others not so much.  Townies don't become firefighters unless you have a Sim that becomes a firefighter.  Private Investigator, Architect and Ghost Hunter don't require workmates so they don't spawn even when you do join.
