Glitch or game design?
« on: February 20, 2012, 06:35:40 AM »
So I was testing out the writing self-employed career, and thought that I could write a tonne of books while on vacation, then come back and get a nice promotion - like, all of them - when my first massive royalty cheque was recieved that Sunday. The check rolled in, and NOTHING! It didn't contribute a single simolean! I had also read a while back that you could sell books at the consignment store to go towards the writer career. Not true either, it seems.

So is this, especially with the royalty cheque - a glitch or game design?

I made the same discovery not so long ago, probably for the same reason. I suppose it's a rather game design than glitch in this case. I'm not sure because I don't remember enough the writing challenge from last year. Bur what's for sure is that for now, only the $ received for the chapters and for finishing a book count towards the SE career. The weekly royalties (6 Sundays) don't count indeed.

Selling the books at the consignment shop doesn't count either. This isn't something that I tested, but I remember that it wasn't banned in last year challenge, precisely because it had no impact.

Now, that said, it doesn't mean that writing is completely useless either  ;)

The first time I heard about royalty checks not counting for the writer career was in the Dreamweaver Dynasty.  It almost caused Pam to lose because she had to get Forest a new job and hope he would make the final promotion in time.   Did you get any credit for writing the books while you were on vacation?  I'm just checking because I'm fairly certain while on vacation it doesn't matter what the job is, you can't progress because you're on vacation.

You can paint while on vacation and put the paintings in your inventory and sell them when you return.
You can increase your writing skill while on vacation; but, if you finish the book on vacation it may not count. I wait until I return to complete the book.

EA Standard disables your sim's career while on vacation.  It appears to be a blanket shutdown, to reduce the risk of you losing your job if the rabbithole does not exist and what-not.

When [Ambitions] was released, EA never bothered to alter the system to handle self-employed careers differently.

Because of that, any work-related stuff you do while on vacation does not count towards your career.

Not true with painting. My simmade a ton of paintings on vacation and put them in her personal inventory. When she returned home, she was able to sell them at the consignment store and progress.
As I said before, for writing, you can increase your writing skill; but, you need to finish the book at home.

For the celebrity increase to work-out for 4 hours; it works on vacation. I've done it many times while learning martial arts.

That's because you used the consignment store to sell the paintings, at home, when your sim's career was already enabled. If you sold the paintings while on vacation, it wouldn't count towards the sim's career progress (not too sure about this, just making an assumption).

Celebrities were added with Late Night, and the 4 hours work out thing is a special opportunity and has nothing to do with the career tab whatsoever.

That was the reasoning why I was thinking that when I arrived home and waited for my Sunday cheque that it would count. I knew the money I got while writing on vacation wouldn't count - but I was hoping the Sunday Royalty cheque would. No such luck. Looks like my simmies stay home to write from now on. But maybe, if they have time to kill, they can improve their writing while on vacation so that all the books they write are better quality.

Yes, because you're selling them when you get home.  When you're writing a book, the royalties are tallied and applied immediately, so if your career is disabled on vacation, you don't get credit for it while traveling.

Royalty checks have never counted toward career promotions.  Only the money you get while writing the chapters goes toward the career.  Yes, I found out the hard way with Forest Dreamweaver.
