Help with roof, is this one even possible?
« on: November 07, 2011, 03:35:10 AM »
I was browsing the floor plan sites as suggested, and loved on enough to have a go at building it myself. Was bobbing along fine until I came to doing the roof.  Now I'm stuck.  It is possible to do a 2 sided roof on a 6 sided building?  If not is it possible to do any single roof to fit it? I really don't want loads of little bits of roof.

Here's a link to the plan I'm trying to copy: http://www.houseplans.com/659-square-feet-1-bedrooms-1-bathroom-contemporary-house-plans-0-garage-15320

EDIT:  If anyone can advise how to do a roof like please pm me and I'll have another go at this, but for now I'm giving up. It gave me a new idea for an octagonal tower house.

Yes that is possible. It won't look exactly the same, but you can do something similar that will give the same feel. You would use the gable roof tool and it would have to hang over the ends a bit. mmm give me 5 and I'll do a quick build and take a pic to show you what i mean.
Funny you should ask this as I was thinking on doing a bit of an article on using the roof tools lol

I'm going to have to hold off doing that right now Lesley, we have a storm rolling in and the lightning is getting a little too close. Time to shut down the computers till it passes.

Hope the storms passes you without damage!  I'm rather enjoying my octagonal house at present.  If you are thinking of doing a tutorial type post then I'm sure that will cover it. I'm sure a lot will welcome that too. Great idea!

The storm passed last night, but by the time it did, it was almost 10.30pm I only had time for a quick build before bed, no time to actually post it here.
I'll still show you, just in case you want to go back and give it another try.

Before you do anything, go to the roof tool and turn of the auto roof (really wish this was off by default)
Build you basic shape.

Extend the side walls to the same point as the front and back point.

Go up a level and add walls and a floor, then remove the walls.

Use the high gable roof tool and put a roof over the middle section with straight side walls.

Now use the same tool to add a roof to the ends (we need to do it in parts to get the walls

Remove the extended walls on the ground level and also the wall at the end of the gable roof

to make it look a bit better, add a collumn on top of the point bit. Also add a bit of floor above the collumn so the collumn doesn't look like it's supporting nothing

Then just repeat for the other end.

That's probably the best you can do with the game limitations. Once done, you can add windows and doors to the lower angled walls, plus you can use the move objects cheat to add windows to the top wall.

Hope that's a little bit helpful

Great tutorial for it thank you Norma.   I'm guessing it isn't possible to extend the walls up to meet the roof in that case? Trust me to pick a shape that's so awkward. I'm still glad I picked it though as trying to build it is what gave the idea for the octagonal house with tower and I love that one!

No, you can't have the walls follow the bottom section and stop when they hit the roof. You add a wall and it just extends through the roof looking very strange lol. There are a few tricks when building using a couple of cheats, but some things are just not possible.
