Welcome to the Forum, Sofila.

I believe this just a genuine, bonafide b-u-g!!  EA will have to address the issue and fix it with an update to the game.  I really don't think anything less will resolve the problem.

Any game has bugs really, so I am not too bothered about that. But it is the fact that I create a sim that is entirely adjusted to being an explorer/photographer etc, who ends up not being able to enter tombs! That is a slight problem...
So preventing the bug from happening is not too high on my priority list, I just want to 'undo' it for now, if anyone knows how?

I wasn't able to undo it at all unfortunately.  The only solution I was able to come up with was to delete that entire family/neighborhood and start over.  This time, no vacation homes and no romance with foreign nationals.  I know that sucks, especially after spending so much time exploring, but once I started over with those two self-imposed rules I haven't had any other problems.
