The Brave Trait and Promotions
« on: February 26, 2010, 12:44:18 PM »
I was playing a test character for the upcoming careers challenge and fiddling around in seeing if the Brave trait made sense in getting promotions. My character was in the Medical career and her boss, Geoffrey Landgraab was her best friend. She invited him over, fed him, danced with him for a couple hours and no promotion when she asked him. I have never gotten a promotion by asking. I don't know what the deal is, but I just can't do it. She has the Lucky and Brave traits, but it didn't matter. The only thing I'm wondering is her Logic metric was bad at the time she asked Geoffrey.

I have had a lot of sims get promotions by asking.  None of them had the Brave or Ambitious traits.  As far as I can tell, the secret is their performance meter needs to be almost at the top and, of course, a good relationship with the boss.  Invite the boss over, talk about work, and pretty soon they will get the options to Ask for Promotion and Ask for Raise.  If you get a promotion early in the day before going to work (like the cooks, who work evenings), then they don't have to go to work that day.  I was very surprised the first time this happened - I kept trying to get my sim to go to work and wondering where the carpool was.   I finally looked at the Career tab and found out she didn't have to go to work until the next day.

Wow. Great info, Schipperke. Thanks. Yeah, when my test Sim asked Geoffrey Landgraab, she had just received a promotion at work, so her performance meter was completely at the bottom, so that was probably why she didn't get it.

I tried something similar with a couple, helpfully they both had the same boss at the time, and I could get a promotion for one and the other a raise but I couldn't ask for both promotion and raise for the same sim on the same day.  After the 1st one had asked for a promotion, the other could only ask for a raise so I wonder if there is a restriction on the combinations.

The only time my characters have been able to ask for and get promotions has been when their performance meters were almost full.  I don't know if Brave or any other traits would allow them to get promotions at a lower level.  Anyway, asking for a promotion and being refused doesn't appear to damage their mood or the relationship, so it can't hurt to try.

I did actually read - I think perhaps in the tips that come with the game - that the career meter has to be full before you ask for a promotion. Still, has never worked for me even when it was full.
I have also found that if you get romantically involved with the boss, the option to ask for raise/promotion disappears. Has anyone else had this happen? I thought that would help my sim get a promotion, but nope!

Well, at least for the purposes of the Career Couples' Challenge I'm hoping that each of my Sims gets promoted every day. I need that's a tall order, but it should be a pretty regular thing if their metrics are always Outstanding. So, if that's the case, then asking for Promotions shouldn't really be an issue. I'll probably not even worry about the Brave trait. Ambitious and Workaholic, on the other hand, really seem to jack up the performance meter since you can work hard without getting too stressed. Those two traits seem golden no matter what the career.

Yes, the time to ask is when the performance meter is near full. I think brave helps if you are not in such a great relationship with the boss(like if you're just friends and not good or best friends). Of course brave helps with other things, like catching those pesky assassin bugs when you're on vacation...and it's a good burglar deterrent.

hmm, this may be of help to you then, quoting J.M.Pescado from MATY:

Quote
Here's what I've found so far regarding Work Performance, on default values:

1. For each "performance metric", a sim receives a score ranging from -3 to +3. The average of these values is then divided by 3 to attain a value of and multipled by MaxPerfFlowPerHour or MinPerfFlowPerHour (if negative), which varies by job.
2. For being ambitious, a sim receives +2 work performance per hour.
3. For working hard, a sim receives +3 work performance per hour.
4. For having the MultiTask perk, a sim receives +3 PPH.
5. For goofing off, a sim receives -1.5 PPH and gains +20 fun/hr. Negated by Professional Slacker perk.
6. For sleeping, a sim receives -3 PPH.
7. For "building independent case" (Law Enforcement), a sim receives -1 PPH.
8. Having the "Brave" trait(Military/Law Enforcement) or having the "Evil" trait(Criminal) gives +3 PPH.
9. The Schmoozer trait does not directly impact work performance, but doubles the effectiveness of sucking up (but not socializing).
A. "Workaholic" does not grant any direct bonus to performance, but allows you to boost performance out of work and reduces fun drain from working hard.

You will be promoted when your work performance passes 100. Note that using the "Practice Skill" tone has no known penalty.

NOTES:
1. Goofing off or sleeping has no effect on performance if you are there before your actual starting hours, but will still give fun/energy.
2. Working hard has no effect on performance if you arrive early, but will still drain fun.

MAX/MIN PERF FLOW PER HOUR BY JOB - Special Values Apply At Max Level
JOBNAME   MAX   MIN   MAX10   MIN10
Default   14   -8   8   -10   For Jobs Not Listed
Medical   13   -8   8   -10
Law Enforcement   13   -8   8   -10
Military   14   -8   6   -10
6-School   11   -6   NA   NA
12-School   8   -7.5   NA   NA

Thanks, TG. That's great and timely info for the upcoming challenge. It kind of reassures me that the very first reward I'll be getting for my two Sims is obviously MultiTask.

EDIT: By the way, TG, please direct your attention to the Forum Rule link in my sig and pay special attention to #9. Thanks.

My Sim married her boss.  One good thing about it though is that you're always friends and easier to stay friends.

My founder of the Character Legacy had Brave and he got a pick this or the other type thing. I picked storm into boss's office and demand promotion and due to his bravery he got it! I think that's what happened, anyway. Not sure if I put it in the blog or not.
