After installing the ambitions ep. my save game is not in the correct format...

I was playing just the first Sims3 game for a while.. then went and got the ambitions ep for it. Now between the time I play'd the game last and buying the ep. I guess there was an update and the save game file structure was changed... Well after installing the ep. my families weren't there because the save game files were just two files, one being a backup file... Not the folders with files in them.  Is there any way to convert my save game files that I was using to the new system so I can continue playing? or should i try something else?
