Why am I getting a hole in my roof
« on: September 18, 2011, 03:00:25 PM »
I'm working on a house and putting a Hipped Roof and a Gable Roof and where the two join it's making a hole in the roof.
I've already built the house once and didn't have a problem, but I didn't like the lot size I used so I'm rebuilding on a different size lot.
Any ideas why it's making the hole this time when it didn't the first time?

It almost looks like a piece of a wall in there that maybe did not connect. I know quite a while back, people were having problems with their roof.  Hard to say, but maybe check for something that is not letting the roof meet. :)

The wall you see in the hole is the wall the gable roof makes. There's nothing else on the second floor.
This house is an identical to the other one. Maybe I can say it's a skylight. :)

This happened to me when I was building my house for the building contest, and I couldn't fix it so I had to change the design of the house.

I just thought of this now, but did you have any different building cheats enabled when you built it the second time?

There ya go, lol.  That will work.  I guess it is just one of those funny little glitches we deal with.  I had a hole in my second floor, one tile, that was it.  But it was a pain to work around.  I think I would rather have a hole in the roof, we don't play with it on anyway.  Hope you find out what it is. :)

That's a good question and it's possible. I'll try toggling the cheats I was using and see if it make a difference.

I got it. I just remembered one thing I done different. The first time I leveled the lot before I started and this time I didn't
So I tore it back down to the ground and leveled the lot, put the outer walls back up and the roof works now with no hole.
For some reason the lot just being a little out of level caused the problem.

Oh yeah, that totally makes sense! I build it on a uneven lot, and now I remember the hole was right ontop of were the bump was.

it might happen to you even if your on a flat lot, delete the roofs and re-do them, always did it for me :P

I redid them several times but it didn't help. I even deleted the house back down to the ground and started over and had the same problem.
But after I deleted again and leveled the lot then rebuilt that the holes finally went away.

This happens to me, even on flat lots.  I usually do the roof last and if I don't want to rebuild and deleting doesn't work, I will try raising the pitch of the roof.  It often gets rid of the gap, at least for me.

I'll keep that in mind. I hadn't thought of trying to change the roof pitch.
Thanks for the tip.

When I start getting unexplainable glitches like that I always try deleting caches and restarting. Sometimes it's a false memory issue, (Not sim memory, game memory) like when old house shadows remain after you bulldoze them. Of course, it's good that you found the real culprit though. The tip about checking cheats is helpful too. Constrainfloorelevation can make all sorts of mess if you forget to turn it on again.
