Limit to the size of Saves folder?
« on: June 08, 2010, 06:05:11 PM »
Hi there, me again!

I started a new game with the new EP, Ambitions.  I immediately got a CTD.  OK, so I re-booted, and tried to load the game again.  Hmmm.  Not there.  My last game, and all the previous saves were there in the main window, but not the new one.  Uh oh.

I closed the game, and went looking for the saved game in Saves.   There it was.  No "gamename.sims3.bad" just the new "gamename.sims3".  I tried re-naming it, but it still wasn't available to play.  So, I emptied the Saves file.  I put every single game onto a portable drive for safe keeping, and then just took the one new game and put it back in the Saves folder.  The moving of saves took a long time.  I have over 14 GB's of Saves!!

Anyway, I fired up the game again, and TADA, there's the new save.  Soooo, finally to the question: is there a size limit to the Saves folder?  Sure seems like it to me.

I don't know. I just opened my game to the main menu and counted my saved games. 43 in total. Every time I get the urge, I just hit the new game and I've never had this problem!

It is odd, and I wonder if it's just a one-off, as no one else has replied with the same problem since I first reported it.  Very strange.

I have had a similar problem since the latest patch. Often many of my saves will not show up. Usually I can get the saves to show up in game if I remove all but the latest few saves. (But I have to leave in a few saves because sometimes a save still won't show up and I want to make sure I have at least one fairly recent one I can load.) This was a problem with at least some earlier patches too. I found the solution by googling; you are not the only one who has had this problem.

It seems related to the error 12 and error 16, which I also get if I have several saves in my save file. (I had that problem before the latest patch.) Removing most of the saves has always fixed those errors.

The new patch has caused a lot of problems in my game. Not only must I move saves every few days, my consignment shop is buggy and often can't be fixed by cancelling consignments and restarting the game. I never had any problems with the consignment shop before (although I mostly consigned photographs, not sculptures or inventions- however I'd often consign over 50 photos a day before the patch). Also, I can't use the launcher and have to start the game from the main Sims 3 games folder (in program files, not in documents). This also seems to be a common problem, judging by the Sims Forum at the EA site. If I travel with more than one sim, all have to leave at the same time or else I'm permanently stuck in the foreign country. I have a few more bugs that I never had before the latest patch as well.

Carl just published a guide about the consignment shop.  It might have some information that will help you.  Click here.

Thanks, Pam and Carl, for the tip. And thank you and the many people who post here for the forum and the many tips here. A huge thank-you to Carl for the site. Both the forum and the site have been very helpful to me.

I have consigned after 3 PM, especially because I was trying to only consign about 15 photos with each "buy" interaction so it can easily take an hour or so to consign everything. (I did that because sometimes consigned photos would seem to disappear and I read that tip in another forum.) In future games, I'll make sure to finish consigning before 3 PM and consign everything with one "buy" interaction. In my most recent game, I didn't want to reload an earlier save because I was trying to follow the rules of the Wishmaster Challenge. Therefore I couldn't reload an earlier save or use edit town to bulldoze the consignment shop and put in a new one (which had worked in one of my other buggy games). It's also good to know that I can sell my junk relics there. One tip for photographers who consign: save the photo of the Dragon Cave (or if you aren't playing challenge-style, clone the photo with testingcheats before you consign it). If you wait to take the photo until you are at level 10 and have the Photographer's Eye trait, it is worth over $11k but is worth much more in one of the opportunities. I made around $228K by selling it in an opportunity. (I had the Opportunistic LTR as well as the Photographer's Eye trait.)

Thanks again for all the help.

Topic reincarnation.
I have recently created two new saves - something about the Royal Family and another one whose name escapes me at this present point in time. Neither of them appear in the Main Menu. They both appear in my saves folder. Is there a limit?

Like I said before, I have never had this problem, and I sometimes have a ton of saves. Right now I only have like 3 or 4 saves active, but normally I have anywhere from 40-70 save games.

I have not had a problem either.  My saves folder is currently 2.16 GB. I estimate I have over 50 saves in there.  I do empty mine out now and then.  I rarely go back to an old save game so I only store a few of them for posterity - just in case there are sims or houses there that I might want later.
