When a young sim wants to move out and get themselves a house, do you still have control of them when your still in the original game.

You can only control one household at a time. You can jump back and forth between the kid's house and the parent's house, but you cannot control both sets of people at the same time.

You would need to do that via the Edit Town screen.

Hi Lamb and welcome to our Forum!

Another thing that's good to know about young Sims moving out is that you can kick them out and it doesn't cost you anything.  The Sim who wants to move just uses a phone or computer and selects "Move" from the options.  When the moving screen comes up, click the "Kick Out" box.  The Sim will take possession of an empty house somewhere in town.  You'll need to follow him/her to see where the new place is.  Then if you want to play that Sim again, go to Edit Town and change the active household.  Beware, though, when you change active households, you will lose all the wishes of your original household.  They will also continue with their lives while you are away and you could come back to find lots of changes in the family.

Another thing to watch out for, that always catches me out, is that sims will also randomly move (as long as story progression is on) into other sims houses, and you need to hover over the houses to see who lives in them.

It always catches me out too. I had a single sim with a teen daughter who lived with the mom's sister. I left that house to go play another and came back to find teen daughter gone. She wasn't anywhere near ready to age up, so I searched the neighborhood and found her living with her boyfriend's family! That was kind of surprising.
