Game keeps crashing to desktop after re-install
« on: June 28, 2011, 11:55:32 AM »
Hello, long time lurker, infrequent poster. I last posted about problems with Twinbrook (not being able to find toddler skill books).
Ok, Now where do I begin?
I installed The Sims 3 (Base, WA, Ambitions, LN, Fast Lane stuff, Design and High Tech Stuff) onto my new computer about 4-5 weeks ago. I have saved my files from my old computer but not transferred them yet. I started a new game and had problems with it almost immediately (stuff disappearing from inventories on return from WA destinations, two sims of the same age not aging at the same rate, and random money) which I posted on here about. Then My game became completely unplayable as there were two lots of my two sims (I tried moving out one set but the sims that were left kept going to bed then appearing in the bathroom over and over). I thought, "hey ho, it's one of those things, games break from time to time" and I started a new game file. This time no travelling allowed!
My game was going fine; minor issue with one son - he had one less trait than he was meant to and I tried everything to fix it to no avail. Again, I thought "one of those things" and left it. I carried on and was getting to the point where my original sim and husband were elders and the oldest two kids had become young adults. I decided to find them partners and move their partners in (Mum, Dad, Two Sons and Two girlfriends and Two Daughters.) Then it was time to go and make tea so I thought I'll save and quit and come back on later.
"Unable to save, error 12; see readme file"
I tried deleting some of the house as maybe the file was too big (I had been playing for about 4 and a half hours), Still wouldn't save.
I looked on this forum and on the net in general for advice; Nothing seemed to help!
I tried going into edit town and that's when the first crash to desktop happened.
I then tried going back to an older save, crashed to desktop after about 20 seconds of gameplay.
I tried an even older save; same thing.
I un-installed all of the sims and store content I downloaded last night then spent all morning this morning re-installing them.
I started a new game, made my sim, made her house, then pressed play and after about 2 minutes it crashed to desktop.

I don't understand why this is happening! Can anyone help?

By the way I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, 8GB RAM, GeForce GTX 580 Video Card, Phenom X4 processor.

Sorry for the long post!

Your computer will be badly damaged by your corrupted game which will, at the least, of caused damage that will ruin any future reinstalls until you return the computer to the factory state. I recommend you backup any word documents and the like to a USB or hard drive.

The key for this on my laptop is F8, perhaps it is the same for you? Restart your computer and press it repeatedly as the system boots up until a menu comes up, you'll find the option. Hope this helps!

Thanks, but it's not really an option to reset the computer to factory settings. Any other suggestions?

Couldn't you reinstall completely the game? Even if you did only install a month ago, maybe something went wrong in the process.

There are several threads stickied at the top of this board (technical help) which give you the step by step instructions on how to back up / uninstall / clean up / reinstall and patch.

Is your game patched up to date?

Have you checked all your drivers and directx are up to date?

Good luck.

Error 12s, I think, are memory issues so perhaps your save file had just got too big. Deleting houses or getting rid of sims can buy you some time but not much.  Eventually all our hoods must be left behind.

Did you try starting a new game to see if that worked without the error?

Have you checked your DEP settings? My game did the same thing last year, and that solved it. Here is the instructions how to check it.

Click to open System.(Under the Control Panel.)

Click Advanced System Settings.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Under Performance, click Settings.

Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

EDIT: I found the old thread I started. Hopefully it will help you.
