I have been having problems with hairstyles also.  Sometimes they are there and sometimes they are not.  Usually the first time I take my sims to the mirror, they are not there and then I take my sim back to the mirror and they are there.  Same goes for the newest ones I bought in the store. :)

I just checked CAS and I have the one that Gogo posted, curious now to shut down and go back in to see if it disappears.

I really like the female mohawk and the new long hair for guys (it's rather close to my own, except I have a fringe)!

Many of the hairstyles are lame. They have women's cuts for men that look totally ridiculous. When female girls age they get crew cuts, or no hair, so you are forced to go to a mirror and make them look somewhat bormal. You would think that EA could be more gender specific.

I noticed the same thing, Salty, and I narrowed it down to the fact that the hairstyle is only available for certain outfits.  For example, I love the new female hairstyle that is a loose braid over one shoulder, but that style only works for everyday, formal and athletic outfits.  If your sim is wearing pajamas or a bathing suit that hairstyle won't even show up in the list of choices.  I think the same thing is true for the cute toddler hair with the hat - I don't think that hairstyle is available if your toddler is in pajamas.

For the hairstyles that don't show up in certain clothes, I think that's because the hairstyle is something that has to be actually styled.  The pretty side braid would take some time to do and a girl wouldn't normally go to bed like that.  She would brush out her hair first.  Same with the toddler hat.  A toddler wouldn't go to bed with her pretty hat on.  No, her mother would take it off and brush her hair.  :)

I have male townies running around with female hairstyles! At first I thought they were women until I checked their names. One had the same hairstyle as my sim and he was an elderly man. I must have a glitch.

A lot of the hairstyles can be worn male and female Sims.  Which ones look like female styles?

I have a few styles that came with a sim I downloaded. Very long and pulled back, another is like Farrah Fawcett. They look totally strange on male sims.

Some of the 3rd party content hairs go on both gender's for some reason so that's probably why.  :)

Wow the new hairstyles are amazing! The guys hairstyles are quite good, but they definitely got the short end of the stick here.

I disagree a bit; I actually prefer the men's hairstyles in Generations to those for women. It's not like they did a bad job with the women's hair in this EP. I just don't have the sims for it.

Now the kids' hairstyles are all pretty great, and they see a lot of use from me. Same with the men's hair.

Personally, I think the Generations hairstyles are awesome because they can be tailored for anyone's use, not sure for "family friendly" purposes. I agree with Trip, the male hairstyles are definitely a lot better than what they usually get in expansion packs.
