Opinions wanted: Caching
« on: December 26, 2010, 04:05:31 PM »
I just installed caching on the server and need to see how it's affecting everyone. This wasn't easy for me, as I had to get into the linux root in order to get it installed. Supposedly, it will store more information about the forum into the memory where our fast processor can snag it, rather than it needing to be loaded from a drive. I'm not going to bias this at all by giving my opinion on the speed until some others have chimed in. Only bother telling me if you notice a significant difference either way.

Theoretically, this will free up the disk access times a bit for the guide by shifting burdens to different resources.

I'm definitely no expert, but it was faster for me to sign in and get right to business.  Was able to go from topic to topic with things loading much faster.  I LOVE the new green highlighted links!  Have not yet tried them to see how they work but that's next.  Thank you Carl!  Huggies.

EDIT:  Links work and are terrific.  Love the PS3 guide stuff since our kid just got hers this holiday AND her Sims3 game to go with it!  We are both very excited!

Ok, major difference now as in takes forever to load SOME pages and "reply" to the point my server says it timed out.  Don't know if this is Firefox doing it or the new set up.  Doesn't seem any slower for me with Firefox on anything else but it is significantly slower.

Let me know if that clears up. It's very zippy for me, and I even just got the slowest DSL in my area  ???

I think the PS3 was interfering or something as my dh also had problems until he made the kidlet go play in another room not connected to the web.  I think Firefox often has these problems as well.  Sometimes I absolutely have to go online with Explorer instead.

I didn't notice any changes actually. Pages are still loading as fast on my computer as they are loading terrible slow on my mobile.

We actually had a little hitch recently, but I corrected it. Overall the server is handling things well over the past month so I'm comfortable with the settings.

A forum reader option is still on my list for people who want to do this mobile. It's just going to be some time before I do that.

Can I post an already found problem according to Nokia phones somewhere? It might could come in handy.

Okey, so the problem I have sometimes on my Nokia E75 is that after I've typed down my topic, post or quote and I click on Post there are changes that the text don't get send at all. And because on my mobile I can't copy/paste my text, all I can do is reloading my page and typing the text all over again. I don't have any solution for that myself.
You've mentioned something about a Forum Reader thing a few posts ago. Can you tell me what that is?

It's a program on the forum end that will format the information so that it's easier to use in a smart phone. It's something I will have to do manually.

So so, that is interesting! Can you send me some info on that through pm, as I am maybe to much off topic here.
I hope it will be visible and accesable through my Nokia, as I don't have a smart phone. Nokia is far from populair these days, I have seen on the news report a few days back, so I hope it is possible.

I will do it eventually and it should be compatible with most mobile phones. It will shrink things appropriately for their small screens. I tried to install one already but it will force me to go into the forum code and change various files. It's something that's a bit dangerous so I'll need to do it all on a test bed. It's a change I will likely roll out when I change the forum theme as Pam has requested me to. For now it's not something that will be a big payoff so I need to put it off while I attend to other things. In the end it will happen though as I want to give this forum as many features as I can. This community helped me to get started as a webmaster so it is the only one I'll devote such time to.
