Here is a link to the guide that talks about gardening.  There are links listed on that page that will help with every aspect of gardening.  Hopefully that answers your questions.  If not, reply and we will try to help you some more.  :)

But to answer your first question, you do not need a specific place to garden, anywhere outside. I do believe it must be on flat ground also.

It's not like TS2 (if you played that) where you had to put down garden beds to plant things. And gerrr00 is right, it needs to be on flat ground.

On your Home Lot click on a Vegetable/Fruit such as an Apple in your Inventory, the option to 'Plant' should come up, then a Muddy patch should appear under your cursor and you click on the ground to plant it there.

You can build a defined space for a garden using fences and terrain paints, but like the others said, it's not necessary.

The best places to look for seeds is in parks and sometimes by the cemetery, but really you can just buy produce from the grocery store or harvest it wild and plant it (if your gardening level is high enough).  Another option to get started is to read a gardening book to get your first level.  You get about 6-8 common seeds when you learn the skill for the first time.
