After getting back from a vacation to China, I found that my Sim didn't have any of the books she stole from the base camp. Additionally, she was missing the travel moodlet that prohibits her from traveling again. However, she did have all of the skill gains she got well traveling, and her total money also decreased based on what she spent.
I didn't notice anything around the forum detailing this bug, but I was wondering if I was just bad at looking and somebody knew a way to help avoid it. I don't mind losing the moodlet, but those books are worth a lot!

UPDATE:
I went back to China, and the books had not moved back to the bookshelves; they really had disappeared into the ether. When I returned home, I again did not get the just-traveled moodlet, and was able to immediately travel again.
