How to "Tour" your new house
« on: January 18, 2011, 11:42:00 PM »
I was moving my sims one day and I didn't know what the new house would look like (how big the rooms are, etc. Sometimes houses are expensive but small), so I just tried zooming in a house I wanted, and quickly zooming out to get a glance of a house, but it didn't work out. (I don't like to waste time going to edit town and loading to see each house.)

Well, I remembered if you shift-click on a lot, it HAS to be a lot, not a road, (with testingcheatsenabled true on) an option comes up saying "Build/Buy on this lot" or something along the lines of that, and I have never tried it. It worked! I was able to check out the house and see what was furniture like, how big the rooms are, and if it is a good deal.
I just find this really neat and I don't recall this in the guide...

Mods - feel free to move this topic because I wasn't really sure if it belongs here or not.

I also wanted to mention a reason why it is important not to change lots if you are not in edit town. If you sell or buy an object for the lot, it DOES count towards your household funds. For example, if I build/buy the park with cheats and I add a park bench, the funds would decrease by $85. This cheat is basically like when you are fixing your lots that your sims buy in live mode.

Interesting info sydney. You know you could pm Pam or Carl about it if it isn't mentioned in the guide yet.

I sometimes use the Build/Buy on this Lot in tombs. It's very useful in turning the traps off and it shows all the hidden rooms of the tomb like a normal house. This option came with Ambitions. Once I used it (with moveobjects on) to delete the mummy I encountered in a tomb in Egypt.
Just got the 'Death of Michael Jackson' moodlet, applies for 14 days, -200 mood

Ambitions patch, to be exact.  :) Yeah, it's great for tomb raiding but I prefer to take the time to finish the tomb without cheats and only use testingcheats if I want to see if there's any hidden rooms/triggers/treasures I've missed. It's also good to have when there's problems or glitches in your game, like dysfunctional merchants in the shops or something blocking the path for your Sim on a lot, etc.

Because the money is taken from your family funds, I sometimes use the cheat to 'gift' friends of my Sims by buying them cars, guitars, baby cribs, hot tubs etc. It's a decent money sink and useful to improve, flesh out or personify occupied houses, especially when you're sick of seeing babies on the kitchen floor and half a dozen Sloppy Jalopies lined up at the stadium. Philanthropy is fun!

Great idea!  I had never thought of doing that but it makes a lot of sense and it could be fun watching the friends to see their reactions to suddenly having a new item in their home.  I think I'll actually try making over a bit of someone's house that way.
What?  Grannies can't play games?

I use to go into people's houses that had toddlers or babies and give them a crib and toys.  I know, I know, it is only a game, but for some reason, I feel like they need a bed and toys to play with, even though they do not really use them if they are not the active family.  Talking about being addicted to the sims, sheesh.  lol :)

I am so glad I am not the only one that does that.  I have had Sims that were firemen and it was so sad to go into a home with a baby or toddler just left on the floor while the home was burning.  No crib, no toys - it was like they didn't even exist.  Poor children  :(

I can add to that.
I once saw a household with 4 toddlers and no cot, or toys at all!
But that's kinda off topic-
I like your idea, sydney and it would be fun to "gift" other homes ;D

Have you ever wondered how gifting those toddlers affects them in later life?  It would be cool to gift a family, or anyway the kids in the family, and then sort of follow them as they age up to see if they have a better life than they started off with.  I've recently been doing a lot of gifting and just watching the exchange of thoughts.  The adults are totally unimpressed if you spiffy up their place, although they turn cartwheels if you give them a new, better tv or computer.  The toddlers, on the other hand, immediately stop picking their nose and go for the toys and chortle and clap with glee at their new rooms!  They seem to admire each item you put in the room.  One toddler went from item to item clapping and laughing at each one before they hit the toy box.
