Do my family loose their lovely animals if they want to move to a new farm?

I'm pretty sure you can put them in your inventory.  I think that is how you get them to the fair.

Manderley is correct, you can put your animals in your inventory.  This is how you take them to the fair, and it is also how you can move them with you if you move your household.  If you don't do that, you would indeed leave them behind though.
Once you're at your new place and have the needed objects placed, click the coop or shed, and Assign Animal.  Your animals in your inventory will come up in a popup window.

Not sure what I did, but decided I was going to move my sim and house and animals to a larger lot and expand from there. Unfortunately, I lost everything when I finished.  Nothing was in her house or personal inventory, friends were all gone and I would have had to start over. Maybe I did something wrong, but glad I didn't save it.  I have never had an issue before now.

@Saltypaws Woah, yeah definitely a bug of some sort!  That sounds more like what happens if you saved a sim to your library and put them in a new save.
