OK For your play style I would recommend:
Expansion pack: Any as they all have some stuff for families But I personally love Get to Work, and Seasons. Seasons does have more new family activities then most so that is what I would likely recommend for your play style. Cats and Dogs does allow for the family if your seeking to round out your families with a lovable fur-ball.
Game pack: Parenthood for your style of play, but my favorite is Vampires. It isn't even close.
Stuff Pack: Well whatever one that has the items you want. Most of these don't add much in the way of play options just items. Toddler stuff pack Kid's room stuff pack are family themed. My first Pet adds more play options than most as it adds a pet to the game but some items in it need Cats and Dogs to be more then decorations. My first Pet is the stuff pack I enjoyed the most.
But here is my honest advice for any simmer who isn't going to just get them all like me, read up on on each pack and get the one that has the stuff you enjoy first. Here is a like to a guide with basic information on each pack. You know your tastes better than anyone here.
