The Sims 4 Expands Gender Customization Options

For more than 16 years, The Sims franchise has empowered players to express themselves through open gameplay and endless customization. That's why we're so excited that today's free* update to The Sims 4 features an expanded Create A Sim mode with new gender customization options, and gives our players even more ways to play with life.

Youtube Video:
The Sims 4 Expands Gender Customization Options

For the first time, you'll be able to customize your Sims without the gender boundaries previously set in place. This means you can now create Sims with any type of physique, walk style, and tone of voice you choose – regardless of their gender.

We've also made clothing, hair, jewelry, and other visual options available to all Sims. Over 700 pieces of content previously only available to either male or female Sims, have now been made available to all Sims regardless of initial gender selection. This includes content from The Sims 4 base game and previously launched packs.

You can now dress your Sims in any attire, give them short, long or styled hair, or customize them with some personal accessories to top off their look. Through the addition of new filters and sorts in Create A Sim, what you do with these new options is entirely up to you!

The Sims is made by a diverse team for a diverse audience, and it's really important to us that players are able to be creative and express themselves through our games. We want to make sure players can create characters they can identify with or relate to through powerful tools that give them influence over a Sims gender, age, ethnicity, body type and more.

So, no matter how you like to play, we hope this update to Create A Sim gives you plenty of new options. Personally, we've had a ton of fun exploring how good many of the short hair male hairstyles look on the female Sims, and vice versa. And we’re just getting started checking out how outfits and styles look on totally different body types.

We can't wait to continue to hear from you about all the ways you use the game to play with life.

So excited. Seriously. Between the chances of same-sex pregnancy (at least on the male side) and the ability to finally get some long hair on my guys and suits on girls, I'm so happy.

Pretty amazing changes for sure. Apparently it has been in discussions for over for a year and seriously in the 'creating stage' for 6 months.

Now that I've played around with it more, I really do love it. I think the cut on some of the feminine shirts for guys needs a bit of tweaking (there are random cuts inwards, for example) but overall, I am so happy. My guys have some nicer hair options (not full access to female hair, no matter what clothing attire is selected), my girls can wear killer tuxes, the guys can have some interesting clothing options too. Yep, still really happy about this. Especially that it lets us have same-gender pregnancies, holy heck. Talk about a game changer for Dynasties; now you aren't fishing for boys just because they can impregnate outside the household.

@dontmindme

Sorry for deleting my previous post.  I was going to rephrase it.

For the curious, I said this update has me personally jazzed, and it is a big step forward for EA/Maxis.

That said, don't expect all clothing/body types/hair/etc. to work perfectly for each Sim.

This is awesome, and something I've been wishing for for awhile without thinking it would ever actually happen. I'm really happy to be able to make my sims exactly the way I envision them. Hooray!

This is so so exciting! I was actually just thinking about this earlier today, surprisingly! I'm happy about this not only because it's an incredible step forward in recognizing gender fluidity, but also because of the giant clothing expansion now that it's not restricted by gender.

Also, same gender pregnancy! I've always wanted to play more gay sims, but I've rarely gotten the chance since I usually play multi-generational challenges based around having heirs.

I can't wait to play with this later! Of course I read this post right before I go to bed!  :P

As a nonbinary person, this makes me extremely happy. It's definitely a step in the right direction, and I'm glad to see that the team at Maxis is continuing to work on it.

Also, it's funny, because apparently people are boycotting the game over it? Like, do they think it's gonna work? Maxis is probably more likely to see sales spike, rather than dip. And apparently the presence of people like me "ruins their experience"...if that's the case, I should aim to ruin every game for bigots like that :P

@MooseSmuggler nice to hear you are enjoying the update.  :) I hadn't heard about the boycotting etc over an optional CAS feature. I'm still fangirling over the male pregnancy feature. No secret on here that I love my male pregnancy! lol

I am a bit curious on this. I know how to customize the gender with the Change Sim option in game but how exactly does the pregnancy options work? I am assuming that if you want a female Sim to get a male Sim pregnant, then both of your Sims must be a part of the household and you must change their pregnancy options so that the female Sim has "able to impregnate" active and the male Sim has "can get pregnant" active. So that means a male Sim cannot get pregnant by just Trying for Baby with a random townie female, but can get pregnant and can Try For Baby with a male townie.

I might try this option out when I start up another Wonder Child challenge - have the husband get pregnant by the wife. ;)
