Advice/recommendations on buying a new computer

I’m looking to buy a new computer but I don’t know much about them. I need a computer that I can write papers on for school, but I also want one that I can play the Sims 3 on. I’m also hoping to have this computer for a while. My budget is up to $1000. Any recomentations and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.
