I got tons in my inventory, I pick them up because they don't look too healthy rotting on the ground, yet they don't seem to hold any value, and now I have just witness one unplayed sim autonomously pick one up like she was cleaning up after my dog.

You can use it for fertilizer if you have a garden.  If you don't, it can be sold in the nanocan trashcan for the same amount of simoleons as plates.
