Besides missing the occasional moments that occur after school where you can give your teens advice that influence there values does not going to school change anything like will anything happen if they fall to an F grade or if you hack your way to an A grade.

Welcome to the forum    Hacking your way to an A would be preferable to letting them get a F-grade. Sims who finish high school with a grade of A get to start their careers at level 3 so if you are intending for your sims to have a job an A grade is definitely the way to go.

I think kids that get a F-grade can get removed from the household but not sure if that happens with teens as I haven't played with any that didn't get an A. The player always gets a warning before this occurs with children anyway so you could always hack to an A then.

The only other thing that may occur is an embarrassed moodlet at doing so poorly.

I hacked a teen Sim to an A grade a long time ago.  The first teen who did it was fine, and received an A grade without getting in trouble.  However, the second teen to try it, was dropped from a B grade to a C grade when they were caught.  I do agree that it is much worse to get an F --- although, I've never seen it happen.  I read in Carl's guide that the child will get an embarrassed moodlet, as Play said.

Now, I always have children and teens with an A grade in challenges.  My games not for challenges have aging off, and all of the children have an A grade from doing their homework and extra credit (and now with Parenthood, the occasional project, too) --- preferably with the help of a parent.  They come home from school and do their homework.  After that, they may play/hang out.  That's how it was for me when I was a child and teen.  I had to complete my homework before doing fun stuff.  I also took those study skills with me to college and graduate school.

It wouldn't be so bad if homework or attending school slightly raised skills as that would simulate actual learning but as it doesn't it acts more like a job.

Once your kids get an A grade, you can switch their mode from Study Hard to Make Friends, allowing them to meet new sims in the child and teen stages.
They accumulate Vacation Days, too. Just have your kid phone it to take a "Vacation Day (School)."
If one of your household sims has at least Level 3 Writing, they can "Write...Excuse Note" for your kid to skip school for the day. I'm not sure but the cooldown might be every two days.

I don't mind my sims going to school until they get an A grade. It's also a nice break from controlling all the sims in the house.
Also, doesn't doing homework raise a grade-school child's Mental skill?

Raising grades now also increases the Responsibility Character Value. Not sure about any mods. Check out ModTheSims.

Yeah, or:
Maybe, teens would just not care if their grades dropped , like adults with that reward trait don't mind getting demoted or fired.
