Salvaging things from the Scrapyard
« on: November 19, 2011, 04:15:42 AM »
My dynasty founder is salvaging things from the scrap yard, and I was hoping you could either "Fix it" for under the buy mode price, but you can't. Is there a cheaper way to "Fix It"?

When Ambitions was first released, you could call a repair person to fix the items and then use them or sell them.  However, Electronic Arts released an update that changed it and the repair person no longer fixes them.  Nobody at all can fix them, not even a Sim with level 10 Handiness.  The only thing they are really good for is to be blown up by an Inventor for scrap and journal challenges.

The only time I have been able to salvage usable items from the junkyard, is when my sim is digging through junkpiles and randomly finds something.  For the most part, I have only ever found small appliances and a book or two.

It can be helpful though if your sim finds an item that you might need, but don't want to travel to get it, and then you can click on it and choose 'replace for x amount'.

I wish that they had it where when you salvage something you can get it replaced at a cheaper price.  It would make a lot of sense.  I got two chairs from the dump and used them as is until I could afford to replace them.  So I saved a bit of money, but my sims didn't like it.

Also, when you visit the junk yard for the first time, it mentions you can take the salvagable thing home and get them repaire.  So I think, maybe they did plan for you to repair them, but then got rid of  it or something.

You can get it repaired, but it costs full price.  Not a huge benefit, but I've managed to get a fortune cookie machine without traveling to China to get it.

I believe that the items were only meant to be brought home for controlled detonation purposes for the most part.

Is that something that changed recently, Hosfac?

At first, we could get items repaired, then a patch was released that changed it to where the repair person won't to anything about it.

I think Hosfac meant to say you could replace the items for full price not repair them since that hasn't really been doable since LN.

This is precisely what I meant.  Sorry.  ;)

Of course, you can always do what I suggested and get the objects from the junk yard and use them as is, until you can afford decent furniture or the replacement price.

I know this thread is old, but I found a trick that isn't listed anywhere and I wanted to mention it for other users who still play Sims 3. If you play a witch from the Supernatural expansion, at higher level spell casting you get access to a spell called "Restoration Ritual". It will restor any salvaged items on your home lot to brand new. I've looked everywhere for information on how to fix salvaged items and never found this info. I wanted to make sure other people know too. Happy gaming! :D
