I just saw this last night, and I wondered when it happens.  My Sims chose to knock politely on their neighbors' door, but they didn't hear them knock.  That apartment doesn't even have the noisy neighbors trait.  My Sims got an angry moodlet about noisy neighbors.

In order to get your neighbors to be quiet, does it work out better to bang on your neighbors' door?

Yes, if "knock politely" doesn't work, your Sim has to pound on the door. He or she also has to complain angrily about the noise in order to be able to go to sleep.

I usually pound on the door so they can hear me. Don't really know which works better. I think what makes the most difference is whether or not you have befriended them. If your neighbors are friends, they are much more likely to quiet down when you ask. At least, that's what I've found.

@lesleyj42 --- I am planning to have my Sims befriend their neighbors in a couple of Sim days.  It makes sense that being friends with them would help.  The next time it happens, I will have them pound on the door after they knock politely.
