Will this computer play the sims 3?
« on: June 28, 2016, 08:38:53 PM »
So i currently have Macbook pro 13 inch, and i'm selling it soon. I want to buy a newer computer for the sims 3+ all expansions and sometimes sims 4.  I have a budget of about $1000 I found this computer but i don't know if it'll run the sims 3 + almost all the expansions. I just want to make sure it'll work. It's not just for the sims either (:

Laptop i found-http://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-zenbook-13-3-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-12gb-memory-512gb-solid-state-drive-smoky-brown/4569210.p?id=1219769558220&skuId=4569210

Also if this one doesn't i would love suggestions for other laptops if this one isn't correct

Things to know-
I'd prefer a 13-14 inch computer
pref not a gaming computer (as in looks)

This is a lot more than you need to run the Sims 3 and the Sims 4.

If money is not a problem for you and you would like a decent laptop this is a good choice. However, if you are like me and would rather not spend unnecessary money, I would consider something less.

The Sims 4 is very well optimized and can run flawlessly on even the worst computers. The sims 3 a little less so, especially if you are into legacies (where the cache starts getting full after a few generations), or games with a lot of CC and mods.

Because of this, the games need a good CPU and RAM to be able to run smoothly. I previously played both games on my mid-2011 computer (i5-2400S and GTX 525M and 6GB RAM). Basically a lot worse than the computer you linked in both the graphics department and the CPU department. The Sims 4 ran without a hitch. The Sims 3's graphics were great but the game would hang because of the CPU... And again this is while running a lot of EPs. So because of this if you are looking to save money I suggest a computer with a lesser GPU, provided you are not looking at playing MORE graphically intensive games.

Quite honestly most of the computers that are manufactured nowadays DO have the GTX940 that the computer you linked has. But you can certainly find the same specs for much cheaper....

After searching on Best Buy...

This one actually has a BETTER graphics card and the same processor. A little less memory but unless if you want to run 30 tabs of your internet browser, photoshop, and the sims all at once, you do not need 12GB. It has a bigger screen however. $850 on Best Buy right now... there are a good amount of comparable models that have the same specs but look a bit different in this price range if it's too "gamery" for you. Haha.

Or if money is not a problem, or you are looking for a more compact model, go ahead and buy the one you linked.

Oh, cool! I've never been a huge dell fan but it's defintly an option, i just really don't like my Macbook haha
But i'm not sure if you, or anyone else will know this, but, what would be the specs i would have to look for on a computer for the sims 3 plus most of the expansions. I'm not super good at looking at tech stuff, i was honestly just looking for the NVIDIA GeForce on any of the laptops haha

What we recommend.

Here’s what we recommend as a baseline for running the games well:
  • Windows 7 (or newer) or Mac with OS/X 10.9 (or newer).
  • 2.5 GHz processor or faster from either AMD or Intel.
  • Gaming graphics card (such as an AMD R7 series or an nVidia GTX series) with at least 1 GB video memory. Look for a card with GDDR5 memory.
  • 8 GB system memory.
  • For laptops - a cooling mat (even if the laptop will be used on a desk).
Why we recommend these specs.

When someone asks for recommendations for a computer, we try our best to find the best computer within the person's budget. We look at it as if we were buying the computer ourselves, balanced with what the person wants from the system. Would we play Sims with this and would it run smoothly no matter the settings? We try to aim for a better gaming experience overall: meaning less crashing, lag, slow loading and other headaches.

It may be hard finding a laptop in the 13 to 14 inch that will play Sims 3 well. The smallest I've been able to find so far is a 15 inch.

The Asus Zenbook you linked to above should play the game at medium settings. I double-checked the video card, it's a - Nvidia GeForce GT 940M - 2GB and has a medium rating.

I do have a suggestion:

Lenovo Y700-15ISK 80NV 15.6″ Notebook = $940.99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834319907

- Intel Core i7 6700HQ (2.60 GHz)
- 8 GB Memory
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M 4 GB GDDR5
- 15.6"

This will run both Sims 3 and 4 with mods and custom content on high settings.

However, please keep in mind there will still be some lag, stuttering and slow downs with Create a Sim, Create a Style and build mode. Also the more content you add like store content and custom content, the more the game will lag. This is due to the way the game handles additional content. Not much can be done to speed that up, unfortunately.
