Forum reader app
« on: November 14, 2010, 07:30:43 PM »
I love this forum!  But when I am on the go, it is hard to view it on my cell phone.  I have an android phone.  I was doing some research for some kind of forum reader app and came across a popular app by tapatalk.com.  If by chance you have time maybe could you check it out and see if it is something good for this forum?

They say they only support vB/IPB/SMF/phpBB.  To my understanding (from Pam) this is powered by a SMF.  I don't know all the great owner/operator details to running a forum so I couldn't tell you much more about it.  But it does say it is free for you to add the forum, I just have to pay to use the app on my phone.

Thanks for reading my suggestion!

That would be really cool and a great way for the forum to make money if they charge a dollar or two for it.

The app works for iPhone 4 as well (android.. really?) so I agree that its an awesome idea. I have a long bus ride to and from school and usually spend my time on an RSS app. Being able to access the forum in a touch-friendly way would be great.

On the website it says that the app is for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry (free) and Nokia (free).  It is only free for the 2 platforms(?) because it is still in a beta version.

I'm definitely interested in filling this request, but I ran into a lot of trouble trying to get the mod to install. It's funny, looking for alternative plugins I come across this thread  :-\  It looks like tapatalk is likely the only option out there right now for this type of thing. This is yet another thing that would likely be easier to do with SMF 2.0.

For now I have to be curious if either of these options will help, as they remove all the pretties from the interface and make the forum easier to view on a smart phone. Try going to either url:

http://www.carls-sims-3-forum.com/index.php?wap2
http://www.carls-sims-3-forum.com/index.php?imode

Either of the above options do support posting and it should make a big difference for now. When you enter the forum with either of the above arguments on the end, it will stay that way for your browsing session. Let me know how this goes, and I will keep this in mind in the near future. I set up a forum owner account at tapatalk and may also seek support there.

Thank you Carl.  I look forward to the day when I can use the app.  The second link you provided is a nicer way to go on the site.  No more accidently opening ads.  I couldn't figure out how to navigate the site with the first link you listed.  No worries though the 2nd link will suit my purposes for now.   Thank you again.

I just tested out both sites on my phone. Although they do make the forum easier to view, to be completely honest, they're both a little rough looking.

They are.  But Carl did say it was basic.  They both are a little hard to navigate for me though.  I have to hit the back button on my phone many times to get back to the main screen to pick which category I want.  I wish there was a home button.  That would make it easier.

I get the top Link on my phone by default. I use a Blackberry so maybe that is why.
