Rosebuds in the City - Updated: 1/3/16 (Anyone reading?)
« on: December 24, 2016, 11:04:02 AM »

Welcome to my Rosebud in the City challenge story. Based on the rules I found here with a little imagination thrown into the mix, I decided that this challenge would be a great way to explore all that San Myshuno has to offer as well as making money without cheats! (I'm sure many of you relate to how difficult this is!! Patience is not my strong suit lol.) This will be a multi-generation story, though how many generations I don't know; I'm trying to do it in as few generations as possible. The goal, of course, is to reach 1,000,000 simoleons. Please enjoy my little story.

Prologue

Hello, everyone. My name is Saisho Bara. I recently finished college and decided to set out on my own to the Big City to make something of myself. My parents definitely didn't want me to go so far away; they wished I would stay home in Shang Simla and help run the family restaurant. I have never really enjoyed cooking myself, though I love to eat and write. I want to become a famous food critic and become incredibly wealthy. I found an apartment online and immediately left to follow my dreams!

The minute I arrived to my apartment, I was appalled. This is NOT what was advertised on Zillow! THe beautiful furniture was missing, there were leaking pipes, and absolutely NO FURNITURE! The whole place smelled like something had died.... I got on the phone with the landlord, but she said that the ad never said that the pictures were of my apartment. She refused to refund my deposit, and since I had no extra money to move, I was stuck. Seriously, what is that smell??

I decided that best I could do was to start saving up money to move. I looked up some job listings online and luckily, there was an entry level job in the Critic career as a Paper Deliverer. It didn't pay much, but a girl needs to eat... and buy a toilet... *sigh* I guess I'll just have to make the best of a bad situation. That's what being an adult is about. Things can only get better, right? Right?!

Chapter One

After moving to San Myshuno and seeing her less than exciting living arrangements, Saisho headed out to explore her neighborhood. She struck up a conversation with a small group, and they began telling her all the ins and outs of city living.

"Make sure you go to all the festivals!" the redheaded woman gushed. "They are so much fun and you can meet the most interesting people!"

"Try all the food," the Hispanic woman advised. "I try not to just eat one type of cuisine. The food vendors have the most amazing dishes!"

"And if you need anything at all, just ask me," the Asian woman put her hand on Saisho's shoulder. "San Myshuno is really a wonderful place once you get used to it."

As Saisho explored more of the city, she stumbled upon a protest rally. She wasn't really sure what they were going on about, but it seemed to be a big part of life in San Myshuno, so Saisho grabbed a sign and joined in the chanting. It was exciting to feel a part of something. Everyone left feeling great about what they accomplished, though what exactly that was, Saisho did not know...

Seeing all the beautiful murals around, Saisho decided to try her hand at the spray painted art. She found an area that was marked off for a mural and began painting. She painted for several hours before becoming too exhausted to continue.

Since she had no bed in her apartment (and she really did not want to be surrounded by that smell all night), Saisho found a bench and curled up for a snooze. Apparently, she wasn't the only one who had that idea. It was a bit demoralizing to have to sleep on a park bench, but Saisho just kept reminding herself that it would all be worth it soon when she started rolling in the money.

After work the next day, Saisho went back to finish her mural. A stranger walked up and watched her for a moment before speaking.

"Would you like some help?" he asked, indicating his paint-stained shirt. "I do this kind of stuff all the time!"

"That would be amazing!" Saisho beamed. "I'm not that good yet."

"Everyone had to start somewhere!" the man laughed, picking up a paint can.

After finishing the mural, Saisho thanked the man and asked for any advice he might have.

"Check the boxes laying around the neighborhood," he winked. "They're full of all kinds of treasures."

Intrigued, Saisho searched around for a few minutes then spotted an abandoned box. It felt a little weird, but when no one approached it after a few minutes, she decided to check it out. Most of the stuff was trash but then she spotted a pretty little snowglobe. Smiling, Saisho thought that maybe living in San Myshuno wasn't going to be so bad after all.

Chapter Two

The next day, as Saisho was headed home from work, she ran into one of the nice women she met yesterday, Kai. Kai told Saisho about a festival that was going on in the neighborhood.

"It's a geek convention," she said. "But it's a great way to get to know some of the people in town, even if you're not that nerdy."

"Will they have Star Wars stuff there?" Saisho asked excitedly. "I just saw the new movie, but none of my friends back home were really all that interested."

"Of course!" Kai laughed. "Let me give you directions."

Once Saisho arrived at Geek Con, she nearly fainted from excitement. Everywhere were sims enjoying video games, deep conversations about hacking, and even sims dressed in costumes equally from popular and obscure fandoms. Saisho spotted a girl dressed up like Princess Leia and rushed over. She and the cosplayer got into such a deep discussion about the newest movie that Saisho completely lost track of time. Before she knew it, the convention was over, and Saisho was left starving and exhausted... She had managed to snag a few free posters, so she quickly sold them so she could grab a bite to eat at the karaoke bar nearby.

While grabbing a bite to eat, Saisho was approached by a handsome stranger named Jake. He sat down beside her and they began to chat.

"So you moved here with literally nothing?" Jake asked incredulously. "Your apartment at least has a toilet and shower, right?"

"Nope!" Saisho replied cheerfully, through a mouthful of food. "My landlord offered to let me shower at her place twice a week, but other than that I'm on my own! Thankfully, there are public restrooms everywhere, and I'm starting to save a bit from my paychecks to buy some furniture. Everything's just so expensive!"

"Then you should go to the street sale tomorrow," Jake offered helpfully, discreetly putting another sandwich on Saisho's plate.

"What's a street sale?"

"Sims get together and sale their used furniture or things they've made, like artwork and such. It's in the adjacent neighborhood, near the spice market, so it shouldn't be too hard for you to find. It's a bit of a gamble, but sometimes you can find nice furniture for a good discount."

Saisho finished her sandwich thoughtfully. "I'll definitely check it out! Thanks!"

"No problem," Jake laughed, finding her unerring enthusiasm infectious.

After work the next day, Saisho gathered all the money she'd earned (minus her food expenses) and headed off to the street sale. She was amazed at how much stuff was there. It was hard, but after focusing on just the essentials from what was available and a bit of haggling, Saisho managed to get some good deals on a sofa, desk, and a chair. With her leftover cash, she was able to finish furnishing her house with all the essentials, including a computer for writing her columns for work.

After getting her furniture delivered and set up, Saisho felt a bit more at home. It was still smelly and run down, but at least now she had somewhere to sleep out of the cold!

That night, as Saisho slept in her new bed, she was awoken abruptly by the sound of scratching nails on her floor. Flipping on the light, she screamed when she saw the completely unwelcome sight of a fat, furry rat scampering off into a hole in the wall. Trying not to panic, Saisho realized that this apartment needed much more than just a used sofa and curtains. For the rest of the night, she sat in bed and brainstormed everything she could think of to make her apartment better, while keeping a fearful eye out in case the rat returned.

The next day was Saisho's day off. She had originally wanted to explore more of San Myshuno, but instead she visited her landlord to ask for some advice on how to fix up her apartment. The landlord gave her some rat traps, with an explanation on how to set them up. It took Saisho a few tries, but a couple swollen fingers would be worth it if she got rid of that unwelcome critter. The landlord also gave Saisho some spray for the bugs. The smell made Saisho cough and sneeze, but what else could she do? All she knew was that she could not stay in this apartment for much longer.

After writing a column for work, Saisho decided to do a quick web search. She found that a lot of sims were able to afford making their apartments nicer by getting a roommate. Saisho couldn't think of anyone who might want to move in with her, but she placed an ad on Simslist to sublet her second bedroom. Hopefully, someone would reply soon and she could make her living situation better.

Chapter Three

The next morning, Saisho excitedly checked her emails. She had several responses, but something felt off about each of them.

"Oh wow! An artist!" Saisho read the first ad. "She even included pictures of her art... wait... is that blood? NOPE."

"Non-smoker, loner, works in the technology career," Saisho murmured, browsing the second reply. "'May or may not work as a hacker for the U.S. government; please be discreet...' Yeah, I don't want any Russians knocking on my door and demanding secrets!!"

"This one has a free-range tarantula... NO WAY!!"

Saisho was feeling pretty depressed when she heard a knock on the door. Her friend Maki had dropped by for a visit and to see Saisho's place now that it was presentable. Saisho began pouring her heart out about her roommate search and all the crazy responses.

"One wanted to let his pet spider run loose in the apartment, I'm pretty sure one is stealing secrets from foreign governments, and one I'm 110% sure is a serial killer! I honestly think I'm going to be stuck in this stink hole forever!"

"At least a giant spider would keep the rats away," Maki laughed.

"That's not funny!" Saisho wailed.

"Sorry, sorry," Maki stifled a giggle. "You know, I'm looking to move into a nicer apartment. If I had a roommate, I could afford a pretty nice place. Are you interested?"

"Oh my Watcher, really?!" Saisho squealed excitedly. "I would love that! I just got a promotion, so I could easily afford half the rent on a nice place in the Art District."

"You know, I saw this place online that had three bedrooms. I've always wanted to adopt, so that would be perfect! The third bedroom is a little small, but for a kid it would be perfect. We're already friends, so I think we could live together without too many problems."

"Can we go see the place?" Saisho grabbed her purse. "If it's still available, maybe they'll let us sign the lease today!"

The apartment was perfect, and the landlord let the girls sign the lease immediately. They had to sell all of Saisho's furniture except her computer for the security deposit, but since the apartment came with it's own (much nicer) furniture, Saisho didn't really care. Maki took the room closest to the bathroom since her career as an athlete meant that she would be showering more, and Saisho took the bedroom with the office space since she would be writing a lot. The dynamic duo took a few days to settle in.

The second night, Saisho got an unpleasant surprise. She was sound asleep when she heard shouting from the other side of the wall. She hadn't met any of the neighbors yet, but her alarm was going to go off way to early the next morning. Charging out of bed, Saisho slammed her fist against her neighbor's door.

"Hey, you need to keep it down!" Saisho shouted when the noisy neighbor appeared. "It's way past midnight and some of us have to work in the morning! I don't know what you're fighting about, but keep it down when others are sleeping or I will report you to the landlord!!"

"I'm so sorry!" the neighbor cried. "I just broke up with my boyfriend, and we were having it out. I promise we'll keep it down. Please don't report us to the landlord!"

"I'm sorry, but try to be considerate of others," Saisho sighed, heading back to her own apartment. Luckily, she didn't hear a peep out of her neighbors for the rest of the night.

Despite the noise, Saisho was excited to be living in a nicer place with a friend she trusted. This place definitely beat the pit she started in. Maybe she would be at least comfortable wealthy before she left this world.

Ah I feel bad for not commenting sooner! I really like Saisho so far, I'm not too familiar with this challenge but it seems, well, challenging haha. Best of luck!
