The get the wonderful "embarrassed I got caught" for a few hours. I forget what it say exactly.

Was the item your Sim swiped in his inventory even thought he got caught? Or was it removed?

I believe as in the sims 3, you don't get the item

sdhoey is correct. If you get caught the item stays where it is and you can try to swipe it again later once the embarrassed moodlet wears off.
To avoid that happening you can save Satisfaction Points and get the shameless trait so your sim doesn't get embarrassed. You can then swipe items even if someone is in the room or even using the item. The sim in the room will still react to your sim taking the item but your sim just won't care and take it anyway.

The townies must be getting better at swiping items. I noticed a little while ago when I went to travel that the park in Oasis Springs had a yellow icon above it showing as incomplete and when I went there and got in build mode to check it was short 2 benches. And the bar in Windenburg also showed as incomplete and it was short a chair.
I knew I had to keep a eye on any klepto guest at my house but I hadn't thought about the community lots.

Wow, that has to be a bug!  How annoying!
I wonder if it's because your kleptomaniac sim has been so "active"?

I'm not sure if it's a bug or not. I have had klepto sims visit my house and had them swipe items if I wasn't keeping a eye on them. So I guess they could on community lots also.

Is there like a little swiping noise when a klepto sim steals?
A child with the klepto trait visited the dynasty house and I kept hearing this swooshing noise and he'd be making the gesture, but I could never figure out what he took.
Lol, @grimsoul   the townies are paying your klepto sim back.

By the way, I saw a youtube vid the other day about two klepto sims with a retail store, only selling items they swiped. I didn't watch the whole video but I immediately thought of you!  8)

@oshizu  There is a kind of swooshing noise when swiping something, so that could be what you heard. But if someone else near when it happened he might of been caught and didn't really get a item.
I've never had guest take anything big, only small decor items. Like candles, toilet paper rolls and other knick-knacks sitting around.

I believe I know the video you talking about put out by The Sim Supply. Him and his friend Zeuz was seeing who could make the most from the store and only selling items they stole. I like The Sim Supply's videos and watch them all the time.

@grimsoul
You're right! It was The Sim Supply and Zeuz! I love watching his speed build videos!
I was looking at some of his small builds for inspiration to start the Apocalypse Challenge (need an 8x8 build), and that Klepto Store video was "recommended" to me, lol.
In his small builds (like 6x6), he uses MOO a lot, though, which I don't know to use. Still love to watch his videos.  *high five
