Site Ad Problems
« on: June 08, 2016, 02:53:23 PM »
I have just used the link here in this thread to order the new Dine Out Expansion along with 2 Stuff Packs. Will you get credit for those purchases here at your site? Also, is the only way to get rid of ads to post 5 times in the forums, or do the other things mentioned to help here also apply to that? And if I donate a certain amount to the site, will that rid ads? I can hardly load the home page as there are so many ads slowing down the loading. Thanks for any input.

@StamperCat

Thank you for letting us know about the ad problem. I will alert @Carl of the problem.

To get rid of ads all you should need to do is register on the forum. However, this only gets rid of ads for the forum.

The guide is a different area. You cannot get rid of ads on the guide by donation, unfortunately.

@StamperCat It is likely a plugin called flash that makes it slow. I went through logs and see you at least sometimes using firefox. This will help with a lot of sites if that's the case. Go here by copy and pasting this in the address bar > about:addons (you can also get there hitting the menu top right and going to addons)

Then head to Extensions on the left. Look for shockwave flash > Hit the drop down and 'Ask to Activate'. When you visit, it will keep that type from loading and slowing it down. You can also disable it completely and only use it on sites where it's required (like hulu atm I believe) so that it won't ask you if you want to continue blocking. Our main partner has flash disabled for us but a backup cannot do this yet.

If I'm mistaken and you're using another browser, it'd be a similar process but you may need to google that or send me a PM and I'll help as soon as I can.

This type of advertisement is dying out, because for one they slow down browsers and flash itself poses security risks. It would probably resolve the issue to disable that plugin and speed up numerous sites. I just did a test and that eliminated the slowness right away. I wish they'd just stop making flash ads, will write again to account managers to see if they're coming up with anything to filter out that kind, it's horrible for anything but Chrome :(

On Origin, using that link gives us credit for anything for at least 24 hours, so thank you :) I don't have a way to disable the message about registering disabling ads on the forum, it is just a news bit that is displayed to everyone.

The news portion of the forum is not an ad, it displays to everyone regardless if you are a member or not. It is a default feature of the forum. It cannot be turned off.

If it's in there it is at chrome://plugins that you can disable it if it's not already adobe,  flash,  Shockwave are all terms you'd look for. I've disabled it in Chrome and kept it in Internet Explorer (edge on win 10) for when I watch Hulu.

That solved the problem. I should not even had that plug-in activated as I know it is not good. Yes, I am using Firefox and now the pages log like they should. And I am not seeing ads that I shouldn't on the forums, so all's right with the world! Thank you again. :)
