Some are the same quality, some are not. Between the three artists and their 35 paintings each, there have been 14 doubles (same pic by the same artist) This is the breakdown of those 14 doubles.
The way they are set as is as follows - av < av (meaning they were both average with the second one worth more than the first)

Artist 1 : av<av, av<bril, av>av, bril<av
artist 2 : av<av, av<av, av<av, av<av, mast>mast
artist 3 : av>av, av<av, av<av, bril<av, av<bril

So you can see out of 14, in only 3 cases was the original worth more than the copy, even in cases where the original was a better quality.

 It's what you observed in your game, there is nothing faulty with that information. That's how things are discovered, by comparing notes about what we find in our own games.

My 12 generation legacy family had all the portraits of the ancestors on the walls and they appreciated a great deal over the generations.

12 Generations? What value are we talking about now: §10.000,- maybe §20.000,- per painting?

I mostly keep them in a chest, because of room limitation. But even in there, they became more valuable every day. Same counts for nectar.
