Ability to make money with Mixology?
« on: May 12, 2015, 12:32:08 AM »
Hey all,

When playing yesterday I accidentally clicked over to my inventory instead of the Nanocan while spamming my drink making and my mixology drinks sold for quite a bit more than they cost. It seems to scale up with your levels and possibly how often you make them? I noticed the emotion changing ones like Prose and Pop, Protein Shake, and Hot and Smoky were my big money makers. I had nearly maxed out Mixology and was selling Hot and Smoky at around $500 simoleans a pop. So I went here to check on the site and the guide pretty much said it's a virtual zero moneymaker without the culinary career. The emotion potions don't sell for much though around $150 or so and you can even sell them after you drink them.(bug?) I thought i'd bring it up and see if anyone wants to take a closer look into it. If I've missed this somewhere else, I'm sorry in advance. I looked and didn't see anything. Thanks guys and gals.

Yes, I discovered the same thing a little while ago. It's pretty neat. Making Prose and Pops is particularly useful. If in an inspired environment, this drink can be made at level 0 of the mixology skill. The best thing is that your Sim will not try and drink any.

I had no idea they sold so high with the nano trash can. That's great to hear, because without it the skill is definitely a money sink. I'll investigate a bit more how it works and make sure that makes it into the page on mixology

I'd like to see most skills be capable of earning some money. It's more in line with reality. When I did charisma, it seemed the social networking was a bit of a missed opportunity. For all I know, it's changed or there is more to it that i missed. The Sims 3 site only got to where it did by going back to things repeatedly and improving them based on experimentation and reader input. Thank you :)

As SWolfie explained, you must sell the drinks through your personal inventory - not the nano trash can.
If sold through the nano trash you will receive $10 to $80 - it depends on how many Sims you have currently living in the household. But if the drink is sold through the personal inventory of a Sim, there is a great return on 'investment' which increases as skill levels rise. From what I've experienced, there is a ceiling price at level 10.

Misread that, thanks for making sure I didn't write something so wrong into the guide. I cannot say for sure since it's been a while, but I am sure that I tried to sell them through the inventory when I did the original piece. that's how I sell anything, after all and that is how I probably got confused :P They are definitely changing more with patches now. I will look at individual drinks and incorporate their prices into the table, retract statements about poor money making as well. It's viable with those amounts. Maybe I can figure out how it scales, as well, by doing some tests.

Edit: Looked in XML and Marketable affects these, so it can be boosted even further! Despite being there, it doesn't work

Looks like they start lower than the cost to make them, and improve as your quality levels rise along with level. Maybe that's how I flubbed it so badly. Hard to say :) It's a glaring flaw so I'll be updating the list within the next hour or two and will give SWolfie proper credit for this. Thank you as well, Tixxis

By the way, you can even sell them after your Sim has drank them! :O

@SWolfie @Tixxis just updated the list with prices, and retracted those negatives about money making. However, despite Marketable being in the code and indicating it does so, it doesn't work. Same prices, unfortunately.

Thanks again both of you. My next gig is to give Doctor some attention and help players get those symptoms lined up with a disease  ;D

This was probably added with GTW, when they made it so that cooked dishes, and it sounds like drinks, could be sold by businesses.  I wonder if it was added by patch for the drinks to be worth money, or if it's only true for people with GTW.

That's a good point, it probably was then that they got boosted. I honestly can't remember what brought me to the conclusion it was awful, possibly selling at level 1, but I probably thought of trying to sell higher quality ones. Regardless, the guide is now accurate on that and people can proceed to make gobs of money with it. Glad it came up.

Just be careful with that! Household sims and guests will drink prose and props from the fridge or the bar if left lying around!  :)

So true! Not that it matters as long as the guests or household members do not wash the empties. You really want to sell these through your inventory.
What I meant to say earlier was this. This particular drink, comes up trumps, because you can queue commands to make it over and over, without having to stop your mixologist from drinking his/her creation. It's a time saver on top of a money maker.

@Tixxis , I wish making the snaggle fluster worked like that. Sometimes my mixologist will make a whole queue of them, other time will stop in the middle to drink each one! lol

It might sound obvious but you can sell it for even more at your retail store. But don't try to sell the emotional potions because they are worth less than the cost to make them.

The skill will pay for itself if you sell the drinks through buy/build mode, but as a pure money making skill it is not as profitable as writing or painting by a long shot. At lower skill levels you will lose slightly most of the time, but a few skill points in it becomes somewhat profitable. At inspired, your drinks will usually be excellent, with most of the higher tier ones selling for double or triple the mix cost. It actually helps to make the potions affordable, because you can sell 2 or 3 profitable throwaway drinks to come up with the 1k potion price. The only bad part is that selling stuff through build/buy typically does not credit toward the fortune aspirations. It might be better to put them in the Sims inventory and sell them that way, but tbh the extra effort seems more hassle than it's worth. $1000 for a four hour buff is still a bit pricey, but it can be worth it because they will stack with some of the  other buffs, and if you sell a few money drinks before hand, you're basically getting it for free.
