Self-Employed Writer?
« on: September 25, 2010, 10:41:38 PM »
Is a self-employed writer supposed to sell his books at the consignment shop? How is the progress bar determined: total royalties, or books sold at the store? My sim got his first royalties but the bar didn't go up.

I've never seen that books can be sold at the Consignment Store.  As for the royalties, they don't count toward the money earned in the profession.  Only the money received for submitting chapters and when the book is finished will go toward that bar.  I've just recently confirmed this with my Barnacle Bay Sim.

You can sell books at the consignment store, I've sold a fair few free author copies that way, and I've had books bought from the consignment store appear in the list of consign-able objects. I tried feeding a book to an omni plant though and the copies made by the plant didn't seem to be consign-able. Can't tell you if author copies sold increase the bar though I didn't check I'm afraid.

In addition to the free author copy, there's an option to buy copies of your own book. I think that's so you can sell them on consignment, but that couldn't be very lucrative.

Being able to buy your own books could be helpful if you have an opportunity to take one of your books to China or something and you had lost the free copy.

The option came up for my author to consign one of the books he wrote. I'm going to buy a few and see if he profits from sales.

Unless anyone knows differently, this is another 'disaster' career with programming bugs.

Olga Trotter is a self-employed author, and works very hard at it.

1.  Yes, she can consign book at the bookstore.  Her books [best sellers?] can generate as much as §30.  ???

2.  Career progress is stalled at level 8. She gets  § credits on her 'career account' when she gets interim payments ['... the last few chapters'] but nothing when the fully-published royalties come in on Sunday.  Today she received §42,000 in royalties, but absolutely no progress to her career bars at all.   ???

@Slingsby:

Royalties don't count toward career progress.  Only the initial earnings while writing the book and when it's completed count for the career.

Thanks ... I was going to post my latest info. Olga got money for the interim payments and the lump sum when she finished the book [but subsequent royalties didn't count].

How she's ever going to progress at that rate I'm not sure.  Poor, girl, all she ever does is write, sleep and eat life fruit!!
