Can't invent wormhole with large crystals/metals?

Has anyone else had this happen? I've found that in my game, the invention constructor only gives the wormhole generator option if the 2 metals and 2 crystals in my inventory are the SMALL versions, not the large ones, even if the large ones are uncommon. I'm wondering if this is a bug or the way it's supposed to be--I have 16 large uncommon metals in my inventory, and it's such a pain that I can't use them!

I had that happen to me, but I thought it was because they were alien metals. I don't remember if the ones I ended up using were the small size.
