Playing GTW Scientist, possible spoiler alert
« on: April 07, 2015, 05:13:25 PM »
Not sure if this is where to post this but I've been having a lot of fun playing the Go To Work expansion as a Scientist.  I'm doing it as part of a dynasty but not particularly worried if I make it past founder or not since it's just a lot of fun.

Playing Scientist you have the choice of going to work as a rabbit hole where you don't interact or "joining" your Sim at work.  While there you manage what your Sim does.  Basically it's a whole new world to play, or town or lot or whatever you call the places you can visit in Sims4.  It is a buildable lot with lots and lots of room to add or change things, (not possible for me since it is in context of dynasty), and contains so many things you are pretty much guaranteed to have a lot of fun with it.  The goal is to have eureka moments when your Sim has a "breakthrough".  Each breakthrough brings you closer to your promotions and are pretty easy to accomplish. So far my Sim is moving quite fast toward reaching level 10.

I wanted to join my Sim there at first.  In this career, (and probably in the others as well), when it is time for you to go to work you get a box that tells you you can "join" or just send your Sim.  If you just send your Sim it is the same as any other rabbit hole, or is it?  Your Sim greys out and you are left to play with any other household members you have.  If you join you get a travel screen and once you arrive at work you get a box that tells you generally what your day is going to be like and it can vary each time.  Your Sim starts to go into the building after you click off the box.  In the upper, left hand corner of the screen is the same set up as you find when you have a party or go on a date.  A green bar line you have to fill and a dot at the end of the bar line keeps track of your day at work and how far you've gotten in your tasks or level towards promotions.  Beneath the bar are the tasks you are asked to finish.  Like in parties and dates, you don't have to finish them all as they change as you complete each one.  If you don't want to do any but just want to explore the world, you can do that also.  It is a HUGE world containing tons of dig spots, plants to harvest, aliens to collect and fish to catch.  There is even a picnic area where you can cook and eat.  One of my tasks was to "insult tourist" so I imagine this is where they will show up but don't know if they show up anywhere else.

There are a lot of employees to interact with aged between YA and Elder.  Grim has visited twice so far so you could have ghosts to deal with or tombstones to keep in inventory or place in the parks they are allowed in for dynasties.  So far mine are in my inventory.

So far I've almost completed collections for crystals, elements, Sim trophies and metals, plus gotten several aliens and plants.  I also have some serums I created which cause moodlets, (red hot makes the Sim who drinks it angry!), a ray gun and another item whose name I can't remember.  The ray gun, when upgraded, can change things into other things.  Those cheap, useless Easter eggs, ( oh yeah, finished my collection of those while collecting at work), were one of my targets for transformation.  The ten simoleon egg became a variety of items from toys to books to decorative items, all worth much more than the egg so this ray gun is a huge money maker!!  You can also use it on Sims to freeze them.

After a bit I wanted to know what would happen if you sent your Sim to work as a rabbit hole so I gave Malcolm Landgraab the job as a rabbit hole.  I wanted to see who would progress more quickly.  Both my Sims went to work each day with all needs full and in the best mood, focused.  So far Malcolm was just doing whatever and I thought he would not be as fast as my founder, but then I discovered he could actually have breakthroughs at home by doing various tasks there, like gardening, doing things on the computer, and possibly observing the sky, (not tested yet).  So if you prepare your Sim early on and send him to work as another rabbit hole you can help move him up the career by doing various tasks at home and on weekends or vacation days.  Haven't tested how fast or what can be done besides what I mentioned as my main focus is on my founder at work.

Sorry for the length of this post but I am so excited about this career I just had to share.  Anyone else have any insights or things to do?

To be honest for me science career is the best of all three new active careers. They could create new potions and cool new inventions that you actually keep. Hover lamp is good since it sometimes give focused moodlet when viewed, Sim Ray is fun even at basic function, the freezing effect is actually handy for extinguishing fire. .Cloning machine is so good that it can clone many neat things from collectibles to Young Again Potion from reward store! The best part is even if it result in failure, it did not destroy the original object and you can always attempt again. Satellite dish is great to prevent or attract aliens abduction and its effect is actually pretty wide despite it looks like it only covers small area.

To top it all off, you only need to have 2 new breakthroughs every level in order to be promoted, you also didn't need to go "outside" of the lot in the job unlike medical career when there is a house call or detective career that required you to move to the crime scene and back to workplace. While i didn't really dabble in detective, I know for sure that being a doctor is hard. The guaranteed diagnose sometimes didn't show up and if you treat the patient with wrong treatment your job performance will suffer badly.

I tried the retail business first but it was so buggy and just made me frantic trying to keep up.  Plus, it could not count as a career for my ID so that one is on hold for now.  I've not tried detective or doctor yet.  I wanted a nine to five job and Scientist does that for sure.  Five days of "work", (fun), and two days off to catch up on whatever is needed is perfect for me.  Much more relaxing, and fun, play.

I didn't know that about using the ray gun to put out fires!  Next time I set one with it I'll just freeze my fire and be done with it.  Thanks for that tip.  So the hive brain setting affects the entire town you're in?  Wow.  Not sure I'd want everyone angry though.  Happy is probably the only setting I'd use.

I liked the fact you could have breakthroughs at home as well, at least my rabbit hole played Sim is.  I don't know if that is counting towards his promotions or not though.  He's just another person living in my home, Malcolm Landgraab, so he's not my main focus.  My founder, on the other hand, is loving going to work.  I'm finally really having fun with TS4.

Breakthroughs at home totally count towards your job performance. Anywhere/any how your sim has a breakthrough counts.

Scientist is the only active career I've played through to the top level so far, and it's a lot of fun!

I actually had more breakthroughs at home than at work.  Using the bathtub, thoughtful shower, toilet (what a place for inspiration!), doing gardening, or reading certain books have all triggered Eureka moments. Viewing certain objects can also do it. I'm pretty sure observing the momentum conserver got me at least one "Euronka!" exclamation.

The Sim Ray can make you a fortune transforming things, and give you items that are only unlocked in other careers, as well as rare collectibles.  My scientist played on a long lifespan had, all before turning adult: the rocket model from the astronaut career, a lamp from either the secret agent or detective career, file folders from the detective career, the single rose from the music career, both the quill and ancient tome sets from the writer career, two different trophies from the professional sports career, and the bag of cash from the criminal career.  I also got books that were not purchasable from the bookcase, including one worth $2500 of "fabulous flour-filled recipes," various Granite Falls insects, including dust spirits and a dragon dragonfly ($600), metals, crystals, and elements, and harvestables like dragon fruit and some of the Granite Falls stuff.  Mostly from starting with surplus $10 Easter Eggs or $10-15 analyzed metals.

As a side note, if your scientist hits a mischief skill of 3, using the sim ray on another sim will result in a positive "Mwahahaha!" moodlet, and they let out a maniacal laugh.

I really hate that maniacal laugh, it took precious sim minutes at work. I also discovered that contact alien doesn't always mean abductions. Sometimes it can summon a bunch of alien to the active lot too.

Contacting aliens can also result in an immediate phone call from an alien. If you have known aliens in your relationship panel then they can just turn up at your home lot/work lot and basically 'invade' your house/work! Usually they will bring some unknown aliens with them. Side issue...I love the maniacal laugh!
