I read all the pages a while back but can't remember if it was mentioned (and really don't want to go through all of them again, sorry).
Anyhow, I was wondering if the expansion packs you have are a factor in the how many paintings varieties you get.  Example would be the space ones if you have Lunar Lake.

I didn't know that having my sims change the sizes they painted was a factor in stopping them from doing the same paintings over and over and over again.

I think the only EP that introduced new paintings was Into the Future, as per MarianT's post. They definitely haven't introduced new paintings with Store worlds.

I just encountered this little gem of a painting for the first time...



The painter is a child at level 6 painting skill, with the Artistic, Friendly, and Neurotic traits. Given the rather...unsettling subject matter (a volcano erupting and houses on fire...?!) I'm going to make a guess that his Neurotic trait is playing into this.

I'm actually a touch creeped out. What is wrong with this kid?

I was confused about two paintings my Sims have recently done, and thought they were new.
I see that they are not, and there are some my Sims have never painted.
What may be interesting now, would be to let my doll do the Art career again, and then let him paint with the various
skill options that they unlock with the career.
Currently my dolls is driving me insane with 2 out of 3 medium paintings being of a girl with green skin in a swim suit.

I just had something really scary happen in my immortal dynasty. Namely, the art slave painting exactly four of a painting that shows two people standing together. Obviously, she just wanted to get all the portraits out of the way. But what trait would that be? She is a loner, couch potato, and artistic.

I'm making a guess here that it is caused by a hiccup in the game.  A simple thing that goofed, such as when you see two horses attached or other weird stuff.

If it is the same two all the time then again I am guessing that is a specific hiccup for that painting.  If it doesn't affect your dynasty I wouldn't worry about it. 
I've had some weird stuff happen in games, traits in those incidents I don't think matter.

there are others here who are more knowledgeably than I am who may have a better answer.
