Can't pickup items up and put them in sim's inventory.

along the same line... my sims cannot pick up his cloning machine or his electroflux wormhold generator to put it in his inventory.  is there an override cheat for this?

When this happens to me, I go save as, give it a new name, close out of the computer all together and log back into the computer.

Then I go through the process of cleaning the caches of Sims 3 (look under sims 3 technical help for what to do in this process) and then go into the game and open up the saved game. The problem seems to fix itsef.

Of course, @lahaygood if this is happening to you in Sims 4 rather than Sims 3, i've got no idea, and if it is Sims 4, I suggest you try posting on the relevant sims 4 board.

I don't know of any cheat to do that but have you tried traveling away from the lot and back again? Traveling often resets sims and clears up errors like that. Also clearing your cache files and restarting the game helps with glitches etc too. Good luck.

unfortunately, yes, I've traveled away from the lot and come back with no change.  certain objects, like the cloning machine just won't go into my sim's inventory even though hany e is a level 10 in the scientist career. 

any suggestions are welcome!

The only other thing I an think of is that there is still something left in the cloning machine... like a potion or something? Have you tried the 'put in inventory' interaction rather than you trying to click and drag it? This one has got me stumped.  Or maybe going into build mode and moving it somewhere else from there and/or into the family inventory and back out again and then trying to put it into your sims personal inventory?
