A Question About Forum Safety
« on: October 08, 2010, 11:04:19 AM »
I've got a hypothetical question. This happened on another forum I was visiting. Let's say someone managed to hack into a moderators account, and was doing all kinds of vandalism all over the forum, like deleting entire threads, or deleting other accounts. What would the other moderators do? (Like I said, It's a hypothetical question, so I'm not saying it's going to happen. I was just curious.)

I have Carl's phone number and I would be calling him immediately in that kind of event. I don't know if anyone else would have the technical ability to handle that situation.

As a moderator, I am technically able to ban other moderators, but not adminstrators. If anybody would hack into my account, they could do a great deal of vandalism, but the admins are above my jurisdiction (I can delete their profiles though, but not ban them from joining again). I think that it means that in a battle, they would be able to ban my account in the end somehow.

Now, if we lost control over an admin account, we'd be in trouble. :-X

Yeah, if someone hacked Pam's or my account, it would be an absolute nightmare. The best case scenario if that happened was the unaffected Admin would be on the forum at the same time. For example if Pam's account was hacked and I was online and clearly seeing she was doing things "not Pam" then I could temporarily remove her Admin/moderator status until things were straightened out.

Great answers, Metro.  I also have Carl's number and would be able to call him in the case of such an emergency.  I'll ask Carl to stop by this thread and offer his thoughts, as well.  Good topic, Simstar.

I'm locking this thread.  I believe the initial question has been satisfactorily addressed and anything further could actually jeopardize Forum security.

Good answers. I keep things backed up in the event of an emergency. Nothing permanent could happen to us, just set us back a little. I hadn't planned for a mod/admin account being compromised, but that event would be similar to handle to the forum itself being hit otherwise. But, as Pam said, to discuss security further would not be wise :)
