Creating a Business?

I was wondering if you could build say your own bookstore or bistro on a public lot? Or build it on a private one then make it public? Would you make money from it? or is the only thing you can really build is a park?

Well, in edit town, you can go to build mode>community objects and place a business, at which point I'm pretty sure you can buy it. After you place the business, if you were able to shop there/buy it, you should be able to edit the lot to include whatever you want, perhaps even delete the business.

I know for sure that you CAN place copies of businesses.

Even if you can place a business building on a public lot, you won't earn money from it.  It's just not part of the game mechanics.  The way to earn money from businesses is to purchase partnerships and then buy out the existing businesses in town...  which is the Bistro, Grocery Store, Stadium, Science Facility, etc.  You collect money from them every week when you have the deeds.  However, there's a problem with collecting that money right now that hasn't been fixed yet.  So, for the moment, we're stuck without business money.

Well, I can collect again now that I have reinstalled and didn't download any patches! Sooo, that makes me happy after many wasted hours! That would be a cool game feature, though, if we could build a business!

I do believe that they are going to add that feature in the near future.
Reason why I believe this:
Sims 2 had a expansion pack called "Open for Business" which basically let you own a business and work there, fire people, etc. It was really funny when you fired someone that has low relations with you.

But this could also be a reason why they won't add that feature in the future. The EP's for Sims 1 and Sims 2 were for the most part very different and I guess they should be, it would be pretty lame if they kept releasing the same game with the same EP's over and over again.
And with all the different ways Sims can now make money outside of having jobs I'm not sure this will be back.

However, that portion of the game is not really as much of an "extra" as it is part of the Sims brand's blood. Creating a business is an important part to the game; so I expect it to make a return.
