Downloading Expansion Packs - Without having the CD in Hand

Hello!
I recently bought the Sims 3 PC version online, and I hope to receive the CD in about a week's time. While surfing the internet, I found out that Origin, powered by EA games, was having a sale on expansion packs and it ends on July 18th. Sadly, I will not have the Sims on the 18th  . So, I am wondering if I can download the generations expansion pack off of that site even without having the actual Sims 3 in hand? Does it create a file after being downloaded or does it automatically add itself to your game?

You can buy the expansions, but you can't download/install them until you get the base game installed.
