Game Update - lost everything 1.5v -V1.7 no relief either

I did a very stupid thing, and I am hoping I can undo it. When the first patch came out, I stupidly did not come here first, I just tried to play. Mistake #1. I got the message for the patch, and stupidly downloaded it. Mistake #2. Here is what happened:

Downloaded the patch. Clicked on Launcher. The only message I got was "unable to start launcher. Please check the log file for details". Then it kicked me out. Spent I dont even know how long looking in this stupid Vista directory for the log file. Couldn't find it. Keep in mind, that when I installed my game, I installed it on X drive. Looked on the X drive clicking on every single folder for something called "log". Went to C, looked there. Couldn't find it. At that point I was just frustrated, so I copied my game rhodes, and Lane as well as backup. Made copies on X drive - made copies per Carl's post.. thank God for Carl. Tried relaunching it after I had moved it back into that directory. Reopened launcher. Still didn't work. Went and clicked on every single folder trying to find the Log file.. still can't locate it.

(I can find the log file for the Sims 2, but nothing in there dated November 2009 at all.. all may 2008)

2 1/2 hrs go by. Nothing works. At this point, I am furious and ready to scream at these sadistic programmers for burying the help file 10 directories deep.. SICKO'S..nothing there. I still have Rhodes and Lane saved so I went ultimate, and uninstalled the entire game. Went to bed satisfied that I was going to fix the problem...

Come home tonight. See posts on this mysterious "error 16".. since I can't find the log file I have no idea if that's my problem or not. See numerous posts on message board. Open "new" launcher. Download new & improved 1.7V patch. Game works..however...Rhodes and Lane not showing up, even though I moved them back to C, which apparently is where everything is..made copies on X as well.. figured I had nothing to loose.

I have come to terms with the fact that I am going to have to start completely over. However, I am hoping that someone on this board can help me put back Rhodes/Lane to where they need to be. If not, I'm ok with it I guess. I do not have the New World Adventures if this makes a difference at all.  I do miss Harrison though.. at least I got to slap Death if nothing else.

I am not completely sure yet because I don't have the World Adventures yet, but I do believe this is a common error and is in the Sims 3 website in the "help" section.  If that doesn't help, I hope someone else can give you further details.

P.S. what version do you have?
Never mind, you have 1.7 now.

I do not have World Adventures either. I DL this, and lost everything. None of the file extensions had "bad" after them either

Let me download the new patch and see what happens to me (copied my files first xD).
