Monte Vista: Gates won't lock

I've tried fencing in my property as an anti-zombie defense but I can't lock the gates in Monte Vista.  I notice none of the other properties have gates so is this just a part of MV?  Doors lock just fine.

Same for me in sunset valley. I know I've locked a gate in moonlight falls before.

Okay, I fixed my problem. I was using part of the house as a side of the fence. When I put the real fence in and it connected to the others, I was able to set the lock.
