Outdoor Living and Town Life - woth gettin or not?
« on: November 07, 2011, 07:13:47 AM »
I'd like to ask if the mentioned stuff packs are worth getting for my Sims 3 game. I'm not a fan of adding gigs (my latop doesn't have an endless HDD) of data just to get 10 new clothes and 2 new furnishing items (AKA Fast Lane). Do those 2 packs add much to the game? I've read about them both but the descriptions didn't state how many new items they add.
I'm not interested in any new clothes, hairstyles, decor items nor cars. I'd like to get new, USEFUL items for my house such as fridges, ovens and such. Town Life only takes 1,8GB and I can live with it but Outdoor Living is yet an another full DVD and I don't want to waste my time and space installing it if it doesn't add many items. Share your opinions with me please.
Also if anyone could link me to all the new items Outdoor Living adds I'd be grateful.

From what I have used from Town Life, it seems to focus on the clothing/hair styles. (which I love to have, but you seem not to) Town Life does add a few new lots that can be placed in your town, but you may not find that useful. I do not recall seeing many (if any) useful items such as ovens and fridges.

Since I don't have Outdoor Living, I can't speak for it.

Town Life - no thank you! Outdoor Living - as I suspected! The give a few useful item for the household and that's it :/ I think I'll pass on that one as well :/ A full DVD for 10 new items is not enough :/

Town Life comes with new lots - a new library, gym, bistro, laundromat and diner.   Items that correlate with the none rabbit holes also come with it.  Sinks, washers, dryers, workout equipment, decor, bookshelves, chairs, tables, decor, windows, doors.  They have two room dividers that I love that you wont be able to get anywhere else and they're straight unlike The Curve or the privacy screens in game. Plus it has a kid's playground set that's really nice if you don't have generations. You can find screenshots here.

Outdoor Living is all about outside.  New counters, sink, fridge, barbeque, tables, chairs, bar stools, bars, outdoor seating, hot tubs.  You can find some screenshots here.

Outdoor Living is definitely my favorite SP. There are quite a few objects that I find myself constantly using in my homes.

I can't make up my mind for either of them. If I install them after Generations will it mess up my game? My sim is a loner. I don't plan on getting him a wife nor any household companions...maybe a mummy but not anytime soon. I'm mainly interested in items for my household. Items for community lots don't matter to be honest. So is any of those 2 add ons for me?

Just because this Sim is a loner doesn't mean your next one will be?  Or is this the way you plan on always playing the game?  There are a lot of things that I don't often use for one game but for another it's spot on.  Outdoor Living came before Generations but I don't think it will mess up your game as long as you install Town Life last ?  I don't know.

I'm in love with both of these SPs because it allows me to make my towns a little more modern and I'm a big fan of backyard hangouts but that's just me.

Go to the links and it shows every item for each stuff pack.  You'll see if there is anything you want and if not, then it's no loss to you.

Outdoor Living has hot tubs!  The outdoor kitchen set is actually fairly nice - particularly for pool parties and what-not - but since you are a loner...

The screens show a bit and I have to say I like the Outdoors pack. My sim ain't the social type. I like to grind his skills and jobs. I don't throw parties. I limit the items on my lot simply because Sims' code is not very well optimized and thus my laptop can't handle too much. The GPU is too weak. That's the reason why I delete what I can. The size of those packs is a problem as well and that's why I try to choose only the most needed add ons. I'm thinking about the Outdoor pack.

Rica->I tried getting my sim a few buddies. I "invited" a mummy (fun addition :)). At the end I was annoyed with having to take care of more than 1 sim. That's why I play 1 sim and will play in the near future. I forgot to add: I don't plan on making my sim's family larger so stuff for kids is completely useless for me.

I tend to get the stuff packs for little other reason than the fact that I don't have them.  I don't spent a whole lot of time worrying about what's actually in them until I actually get them.  It usually ends up that the things I thought looked like they might be cool aren't all that great in practice, and I discover things that I didn't even know were in them that turn out to be cooler than the idea of the original items that I thought would appeal to me.  For me, there is no such thing as having too much variety.

However, the biggest difference between you and I is that I play Sims on a desktop and you play it on a laptop, so I understand your need for hard drive conservation.  I don't think they had laptops in mind when they originally designed it...and due to the intricacy of the program itself, I'm guessing they probably couldn't consider laptops without severely limiting themselves.  Laptops are more concerned with portability than functionality, and have to make sacrifices in the latter in order to improve the former.  Desktops are the opposite:  they forgo portability altogether for maximum functionality.  That doesn't make one better or worse by virtue of being what they are:  better or worse is determined exclusively by the user's needs.  I have no need for portability, so I don't use laptops.

As for which one:  if you want hot tubs without having to install Late Night, OLS would probably appeal to you more than TL.  However, if you have Late Night, there probably won't be enough new content in OLS for you to warrant using up the extra hard drive space.  You would likely be better off disregarding stuff packs altogether, and saving your money for the next actual expansion pack (or buying one you don't already have).

I've got all expansions, except Pets. I don't have any stuff packs and if I were to get one of them it would be Outdoor Living. What if i installed OL, played a bit and then uninstalled it? Would it mess up my save?

No, the only thing that will happen is if you have a game save with OLS items in it, then you uninstall it, those items will be replaced with other items.

That's the way I feel.  ;D The only SP I don't have is Town Life. I love all the added items, and use many of them. There is some I seem to use over and over and some I hardly use at all. But I feel if I don't get it, I'm missing out. All SP's have added enough items that I'm satisfied spending the money on them. Next up is getting Town Life!
