Baby Gender

Hi Carl I was reading your Guide to Having Kids, and found something I would like to bring to your attention. In section "Visibly and Officially Pregnant", you say:

"From my experiments, the gender of the baby was locked in place once the pregnancy was this far along. I had my pregnant Sim eat 50 apples and it would not change the baby from a girl to a boy."

In my game, I am able to change the gender of the baby with fruit as late as the previous night of the birth (3rd trimester), even when the sim is extremely pregnant with big belly. In my tests, the baby is coming out around 7:00 and is going to be a boy. I loaded my save, have her eat some watermelons around 20:00 the previous night. When the time comes, a baby girl came out. Therefore the guide might need to be corrected.

Another thing about the game is: if a sim in medical career (level 5 above) uses the gender checking skill on the pregnant sim, the gender will be locked in place, and no amount of fruit can change it. I did a few tests, and sure enough, before using the skill, I was able to switch the gender of the baby around with fruit (boy->girl->boy, lots and lots of loading). Once the skill is used on the pregnant sim, changes are no longer possible, and stays as what is found out by the doctor sim. Perhaps this info can be added in? This may also be the reason why the gender cant be changed with 50 apples in your test.

Anyway, thanks Carl for the wonderful guides, I really learned a lot from your website.

Yes, I'll absolutely add that info in and appreciate the detailed information. Sorry for the slow response, as someone noted in the other thread i do multiple projects and pop in here once in a while to work in all the suggestions I can. :)

Very interesting observation about the Surgeon checking and locking in the gender, I suspect you're right in that has caused the issue. I guess "determine gender" really determines it's either/or and locks that in.  It happens a lot with writing when a bug or other mechanic hits me and causes this kind of confusion. I have to laugh that I get to fixing this 3 years after writing that!

Oh wow, The Carl! I am getting an Over-Emotional Star Struck moodlet +100! lol. Nice to finally getting your attention sir!

Ya I figured you guys would be busy working on something else. Just a little impatience on my side.  :P

A lot of my findings are purely luck based, coz I just stumbled upon them. Was planning a girl, ate watermelons, out pops a boy. Devastated, reload, ate more watermelons, and get a girl. Hmm, different from what I have read. I just figured it might help more people if the guides have correct info.

The guides are really easy to read and informative, and helped answered a lot of questions during my gameplay! Thanks again for writing such great guides!  :D

I wonder about the gender picker with the sauna. I know I had the couple try for a girl but a boy was born. I don't know why it would be wrong.
