Break-Up Text Interaction Doesn't Work In University

When my Sim is in university, and they send a break-up text back to their home town (or the other way around), the little ex-girlfriend/boyfriend icon will show up, but their relationship won't go down. And if you click on the family tree, the little pink line is still connecting them. However, the other Sim acts like they've broken up - call and they won't come over, mean interactions, etc. But my Sim can't enter into another relationship because of this. Has anyone else had this problem?

Yes, I have had this problem as well. While I haven't found a straightforward solution, here's how I have worked around it without using cheats, mods, or evictions:

- Pursue a romantic relationship with the new sim of your choice while at university, but without going steady
- When you get home at the end of term/in between terms, have another sim in your active household invite over the problem ex. Ask if they are single. Chances are, they will still say your sim is their partner. If so, then have the other active household sim hit on the ex until there is the "convince to break up with partner" option. Once this happened, the broken link of the initial sim to the ex was cleared and my collegiate sim was free to pursue a relationship with his romantic interest next term/by inviting her for a visit.
