The launcher and the internet.
« on: June 22, 2010, 07:42:14 PM »
Ok, I lost the internet a few days ago, my modem died and they couldn't fix it til today. I tried and tried to open the launcher to play my game and it just wouldn't open! Thankfully I remembered someone talking about the program files, game, bin and I was able to play it that way. Today after they fixed my modem, I tried to open it and it opened just like it was supposed to! So I guess my question is does the launcher have to have an active internet connection to work? My brother-in-law asked me earlier today if I missed the internet I said honestly the only thing I miss is getting on the forums. So I am VERY happy to be back and talking to all you wonderful people again!  ;D

Welcome back, Esther!

I don't think the launcher needs the internet to work.  I had a day when my modem was down and I was still able to play Sims 3 just fine from the launcher.  The only difference is the launcher said I have to be connected in order to visit the Store and stuff.

Thanks Pam! Then I don't know why it didn't work for me! The only way I could play it was going through my program files!

Sorry I haven't been on for awhile, but I spent a month in a hotel where there was no internet, and I had the exact same issue again! The only thing that kept me sane was going through Bin!

That's weird, the closest thing I've had is that my launcher may freeze if I try to do anything on the net through those launcher options when the internet is down (search for patches, website etc.). Maybe you just have the step worse from there?

I don't know Swede, maybe! All I know is when I would try to open it to play, nothing would happen. I'd double-click it and nothing would happen. I spent like 5 minutes trying to open it before I went to my program files.

Hey Esther1981  :) Glad you've got internet connectivity again.

According to a EA technical support rep I e-mailed back and forth with a few times in mid-February (after I installed High-End Loft Stuff), the "Launcher" application (in-and-of itself) doesn't require internet connectivity to work.

That said, I know there are times EA's semi-contorted implementation of the Launcher application can cause it to freeze up and go "bazonkers" checking for internet connectivity. It'll get "stuck" checking, and unless you can cancel the process it may never pop up the "start" button so you can just play the Sims3. Of course, since the Launcher's not displaying anything to you while it's back there knocking on the internet's door, nothing seems to be going on.

I'm glad you found the work-around here, and it's nice to type to you.

I'm not sure how "dead" your modem was, but I betcha' the Launcher never got the death certificate ... so it kept trying to get to the internet through the "broke" modem, and never was smart enough to shape up (and just give up) and let you play!  :-X

It's amazing these things (computers) work at all, with all the bazillion things that can go wrong. I'm just pleased most of the time stuff works (and when it doesn't work, we can share tips and tricks to duct-tape it into shape).

This past month I was in a hotel that had no internet, so there wasn't even a modem around! Aparently it wasn't smart enough to figure it out lol. Yes, duct taping it is SO fun lol.
